SASUF Mobility Grants Offer Five Months of Research Support and Travel Funding
SASUF Mobility Grants: eligible researchers
SASUF Mobility Grants are for doctoral students and early-career researchers attached to participating SASUF+ institutions. Eligible researchers must have earned their doctorate in 2022 or later. Applicants must keep their home-university employment or enrolment throughout the visit. Check the current partner list: previous participation in SASUF does not automatically make an institution eligible now.
Funding and timing
For the South Africa-to-Sweden route, the official call lists SEK 28,500 a month for five full, consecutive months and up to SEK 15,000 for travel. Additional expenses remain the applicant’s responsibility. Applications close on 4 November 2026; mobility must finish by 1 June 2028. An interrupted visit can create a repayment obligation.
The official application route
Arrange a host invitation, complete the application template and obtain home-supervisor or manager confirmation. Include a CV/publication list of up to four pages and a motivation of up to 1.5 pages. Submit the complete application as one PDF to sasuf@uu.se, using “SASUF Long-term mobility for NAME” as the subject. The official page provides templates and partner details.
Build a workable research visit
The following is independent preparation advice. Begin with a research question you can realistically advance during a five-month placement. Work backwards from your intended outcome: which datasets, equipment, conversations or methods are essential? A host whose interests overlap yours may still lack the particular access or supervision capacity your project requires. Agree on those practical details before you describe the visit as feasible.
Coordinate the two institutions
Make a written list of decisions needing approval at home and abroad. Examples could include research ethics, permission to access data, laboratory training and arrangements for ongoing responsibilities. These are planning considerations rather than additional universal requirements of the grant. Ask the relevant institution which ones apply to your project. A clear plan helps prevent a technically successful application from becoming an impractical visit.
Prepare a realistic budget
Compare the maintenance allowance with accommodation options, transport and your continuing obligations at home. Do not assume that every cost will be reimbursed or that a currency conversion remains fixed. Keep estimates separate from confirmed quotations. Avoid paying non-refundable travel expenses before the award and necessary travel permissions are established.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split the visit? The funded period is five consecutive months, not separate short visits.
