DSTI-NRF Honours Funding 2027 Offers Full or Partial Study Support
The DSTI-NRF Honours funding 2027 call remains open until 23 November 2026. This article concerns general honours applications only: the first-time master’s, doctoral and SARAO-specific dates shown on the same announcement are different and have already passed.
DSTI-NRF Honours funding 2027: who can apply?
The 2027 framework limits general honours scholarships to South African citizens and permanent residents pursuing full-time study at public universities. The academic minimum is 65% for major subjects in the final undergraduate year, or 65% across subjects of a qualifying NQF 7 postgraduate certificate. Read the framework for exclusions and final-result conditions.
Funding and an important assessment caveat
Successful applicants may receive full-cost or partial-cost support, subject to the applicable criteria and allocation. Do not assume that meeting the academic minimum guarantees an award. The earlier ISFAP-assessment submission date in August has passed; applicants needing financial assessment should ask their university what remains available rather than assume the November deadline reopens that process.
Apply through the official route
The NRF directs applications to NRF Connect, not a manual submission. Check your university’s research or postgraduate office for internal requirements and any earlier processing deadline. The national applicant deadline is not proof that every institution will accept documents until that date.
Prepare your application carefully
The following is independent preparation guidance, not an additional NRF selection rule. Begin by matching the name of your intended qualification to the correct funding category. An honours application should not be placed under a master’s or doctoral call simply because the subject area is similar. Keep admission to the degree and funding for the degree as separate tasks: one does not automatically establish the other.
Request an accurate academic record early. Check that the document clearly identifies your institution, qualification and results. If your final results are not yet available, follow the current official instructions rather than inventing projected marks or assuming that a provisional result guarantees eligibility. Keep a record of questions you send to the university and the response received.
Use a practical document checklist. Separate identity evidence, academic records, study plans and any financial or disability-related evidence requested by the official process. Sensitive information should be shared only through authorised channels. A social-media account claiming to represent a bursary programme is not a substitute for the official portal and university office.
Planning beyond the submission
Retain your application reference and confirmation after submitting. Make sure the email address you use is one you can access consistently. If the system requests corrections or the university asks for clarification, respond with the specific information requested rather than submitting several conflicting versions of the same application.
Before accepting funding, read the actual award terms, the supported study period and any conditions attached to continued eligibility. Ask questions about costs that are not clearly covered. Do not plan spending on the assumption that the largest advertised category will necessarily apply to you.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the deadline for all NRF postgraduate funding?
No. This guide addresses general honours funding. Other categories have separate dates.
Is a scholarship guaranteed at 65%?
No. A minimum academic threshold is not an award guarantee.
Can I apply by emailing Reign Gigs?
No. Reign Gigs does not receive or assess applications. Use the official NRF route and your university’s guidance.
The NRF Connect portal is live and requires login or registration. The public sign-in route was verified; no applicant account or private application was accessed.
