Provisional recipients must register before the award is finalised and need to plan for upfront registration funds.
Astron Energy Bursary: application or access steps
- Open the official 2027 Astron Energy bursary portal.
- Read the eligibility, funding obligations and document checklist for your applicant category.
- Prepare certified copies less than three months old and combine multiple documents where the portal instructs.
- Complete all sections, upload the required files and submit before midday on 26 October 2026.
Prepare carefully
Read the funding conditions before committing to the application. The Astron Energy bursary can cover substantial study costs, but applicants need to understand the work-back requirement and the need to register before the award is finalised. Organise the correct checklist for your current academic status and make sure every certified copy meets the stated age limit.
Match the document checklist to your study stage
All applicants need the common identity, motivation and CV documents, but academic evidence differs by study stage. Current tertiary students are asked for full academic records, the latest or June 2026 transcript, a Matric certificate, relevant 2026 fee statements and proof of registration. Where the portal allows an affidavit to explain a gap in study, follow the exact instruction for that document.
Matric or post-Matric gap-year applicants have a separate school-report checklist, including the final Grade 11 report and Grade 12 Term 2 report with the school’s stamp. Applicants returning after earlier tertiary study should check the separate gap-year category. Master’s and doctoral applicants must provide a supervisor’s recommendation letter where applicable.
Additional documents are conditional rather than universal. Astron Energy’s portal lists an existing bursary agreement where relevant, a 2027 acceptance letter if available, disability-related evidence if applicable and a guardian-consent form for applicants under 18. Do not assume that every optional document must be supplied by every candidate.
What provisional acceptance means
Provisional acceptance is not the final award. Shortlisted applicants who reach that stage must provide the required Matric certificate and 2027 proof of registration. The portal specifically says that funding is awarded after registration, so applicants must plan for the funds needed to register at the beginning of the year.
Astron Energy’s portal also states that applicants who have not received a response by 31 January 2027 should regard the application as unsuccessful. Successful applicants must sign the sponsor’s agreement. Read the work-back and repayment conditions in that agreement before accepting funding.
Practical preparation checklist
Create a document checklist for your own study category before uploading. Record which copies are certified, when the certification was done and whether a multi-page academic record is complete. Keep conditional items separate so you do not confuse an optional acceptance letter with evidence required for everyone. This is an organisation tip, not an additional bursary requirement.
Frequently asked questions
Does the bursary cover more than tuition?

Are all engineering qualifications eligible?
No. The listed engineering routes are mechanical, chemical and electrical BSc or BEng qualifications. BTech engineering is explicitly excluded.
Can a recipient hold paid employment while funded?
Astron Energy’s portal requires full-time study and says paid employment can lead to termination and repayment. Check the sponsor’s terms before accepting an award.
When does the application close?
26 October 2026 at 12:00 midday. It is not an end-of-day deadline.
Is work-back required?
Yes. Astron Energy’s portal states a work-back obligation for every funded year, with possible repayment plus interest if it is not met.
