The SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary 2027 offers actual tuition support capped at R60,000 a year for eligible current Food Science and Technology students. Applications close on 29 January 2027.

Official information checked on 26 October 2026. Reign Gigs is an independent publisher, not the funding provider. Selection and funding remain subject to the provider’s conditions.

A separate route for current students

The official application form is for the second to fourth year of study. This differs from the matriculant programme already covered on Reign Gigs, which has a different deadline and entry route. Applicants must meet the undergraduate programme’s own conditions rather than reuse the matriculant checklist.

SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary 2027: eligibility

Applicants need full-time first-degree or diploma study at a South African tertiary institution, South African citizenship or permanent residence, and at least three years’ residence in the country. At least 12 months of SAAFoST membership before application is required. Selection considers academic merit, employment equity and potential. Tuition is paid directly to the institution in two instalments, subject to satisfactory progress.

Application documents

Prepare the official form, a passport-style photograph, certified identity or passport copy, recent results, personal statement, institutional reference and proof of 2027 registration. Use the current official page’s submission instructions. Its address is mdo@saafost.org.za; the linked PDF lists irene@saafost.org.za, so confirm the current recipient before sending.

Conditions to understand

Recipients sign an agreement and provide six-monthly progress reports. Failure, unauthorised interruption or non-completion may lead to loan conversion at the Foundation’s discretion. The support does not promise living expenses.

Give your application a clear academic focus

Explain your interest in food science through something specific you have studied, investigated or worked on. For example, you can discuss an area you want to understand better, such as food quality or processing, without claiming that the bursary favours that topic. Link your motivation to your real course and experience.

Ask an appropriate person at your institution for the reference with time to spare. Share the official requirements and a short factual summary of your studies, rather than writing praise for them to sign. Check that your latest academic record includes all pages and that the registration evidence identifies the correct study year. These are editorial preparation suggestions, not extra selection criteria.

Before accepting funding

Read the agreement alongside your study plan and budget. Work out what will happen if your course takes longer than expected, you need to interrupt studies or some tuition remains unfunded. Ask the Foundation about anything you do not understand before signing. Keep copies of the agreement, fee statements and correspondence so that later payment or progress questions can be answered from records rather than memory.

Official supporting checklist or application form

Use the official provider’s current instructions if any detail changes. Do not send identity, financial or academic documents to Reign Gigs.

School leavers should read the separate SAAFoST matriculant bursary guide rather than using this current-student application route. Always compare the relevant membership and study-year requirements.
