City of Johannesburg Internships Pay Up to R10,109.86 a Month
The City of Johannesburg’s Social Development Department has four internship routes in Circular 031/2026. Placements run for no more than 18 months. Three graduate routes advertise R10,109.86 monthly basic pay; the enrolled-student Substance Abuse route pays R4,951.88 monthly. These amounts exclude benefits.

Only Johannesburg residents will be considered. The programme is for qualifying youth who have not previously taken part in an internship, except where the earlier internship was unrelated to their course of study. Applicants also need the role’s practical competencies: confidentiality, communication and record keeping are important; the circular sets out additional technical and teamwork expectations for each stream.

Frequently asked questions
Does every intern receive the higher amount? No. Substance Abuse is the enrolled-student route and has the lower advertised rate.
Will the placement last exactly 18 months? The advert sets a maximum, not a guaranteed 18-month term.
What happens after applying? Only shortlisted applicants are contacted. If there is no response within six weeks after closing, the City says to treat the application as unsuccessful. It may also decide not to appoint.
