Old Mutual Education Trust Guide: Partial Scholarships and Student Support

Scholarship planning guide: the 2027 application round is closed. The University of the Western Cape’s official financial-aid notice gives 31 August 2026 as the closing date. No later round was verified on 1 November 2026. This is a union-linked scholarship, not funding open to all students.

What the published round offered

The Old Mutual Education Trust notice described partial funding of R77,000 per academic year, a laptop on joining, tutoring, counselling and student support. It also described a World of Work programme involving vacation-work and internship preparation. These are the published round’s benefits, not a newly announced offer.

The essential union connection

Funding was for undergraduate qualifications at public South African universities. Applicants needed a qualifying connection to one of the Trust’s ten participating unions: as a member, union employee, spouse or child dependant. The university notice excluded second degrees, one-year courses, short courses and postgraduate studies.

It requested identity/passport records and relevant school or university academic results. The summary does not replace the Trust’s full rules or dependency checks.

Reign Gigs planning advice

Start by checking the union relationship, not by assuming that the scholarship is open to every student. Ask the relevant union office which membership or employment evidence would be needed for a future round, and check the Trust’s current definitions of eligible dependants.

Partial funding means you should calculate the difference between an award and your total study costs. Keep tuition, accommodation, books, meals and transport separate in your budget. Do not treat the amount from a closed round as a guarantee of what a future award will pay.

Prepare clear academic records without cropping out your name, institution, course or results. If a family relationship needs supporting documentation, follow the administrator’s current instructions rather than sending sensitive records to someone offering to reserve a place.

Use the correct scholarship route

This Trust scholarship is distinct from DENOSA’s general study-fund bursary and from Old Mutual employment internships. A member may encounter several schemes through the same union, each with different rules and dates. Do not transfer an open deadline from one scheme to another.

For the next round, check the Trust’s official page and your university or participating union’s notice. Only rely on the dates and benefits in the new announcement.
