SA Youth Teacher Assistant Programme: School Experience and Skills Training Guide

Status checked 1 November 2026: this is a programme and preparation guide, not an open-vacancy announcement. The Department of Basic Education has reported the close-out of BEEI Phase V. A new teacher-assistant application window has not been verified here. Do not treat old Phase V adverts as current recruitment.
What the teacher-assistant programme does
The Basic Education Employment Initiative places young people in school-support roles. DBE’s programme information describes education-assistant work in curriculum support, ICT and reading, alongside general school-assistant roles such as maintenance and sports support. Training is intended to build skills that can help participants beyond their placement.
These roles should not be confused with permanent qualified-teacher vacancies. Nor does registering on a youth employment platform guarantee an appointment at a school.
What the latest official history confirms
Phase V applications ran from 22 April to 9 May 2025 through SAYouth.mobi. DBE subsequently held its Phase V close-out meeting on 13–14 March 2026. Its report discusses preparations and improvements for a future phase, but does not provide a new application window.
The close-out report also explains that SAYouth.mobi matches young people with opportunities using their information, skills and role requirements. It describes the platform as zero-rated.
Eligibility: read the phase-specific rules
DBE’s broad programme page describes Matric English for education-assistant roles and identifies some maintenance and sports roles that do not require Matric. The latest completed phase targeted young people aged 18–34, with an age-cut-off linked to March 2026.
Those historical age rules are not future eligibility criteria. A new phase could change age cut-offs, participation restrictions, qualifications, grant-related conditions, residence requirements or documents. Do not combine requirements from different years into an invented current checklist.
Where to check for a real announcement
Use the DBE BEEI programme page and official provincial education notices. Read the Phase V close-out report for the status context. The previous Phase V recruitment notice is historical, not an application invitation.
You can visit SA Youth to manage your profile and check opportunities. A profile is useful preparation, but it does not mean that teacher-assistant recruitment has opened.
Practical preparation while waiting
The following is independent Reign Gigs advice.
Keep your contact information, address and education history accurate. Save your login details securely, and do not share passwords or verification codes with someone offering to apply on your behalf.
Keep clear copies of existing qualification documents. Avoid spending money on new certificates or travelling to schools until a genuine current notice tells you what is needed and how applications will be handled.
If you have supported reading, sports, technology or community activities, record what you actually did and learned. These examples can help you explain your interests, but they do not replace the eligibility conditions of a future advert.

What is the current stipend?
No amount is presented as current because a new verified intake has not been established.
