SITFE Bursary 2027 Offers Study Support for Missing-Middle Students
The SITFE Bursary 2027 application is open for qualifying students connected to South Africa’s sugarcane-growing areas. The Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education requires applications to reach the South African Sugar Association on or before 30 November 2026.
The current scheme focuses on missing-middle applicants, while providing a specific exception for children of sugarcane farm workers. Understanding that distinction is important before deciding whether to apply.
SITFE Bursary 2027: the main eligibility route
The current official information requires South African citizenship and a connection to sugarcane-growing areas in KwaZulu-Natal or Mpumalanga. The missing-middle route is for families with combined annual income between R350,000 and R600,000.
Applicants must have applied or registered in science, engineering or agriculture at an eligible institution. The 2027 poster identifies public universities and universities of technology, alongside Owen Sithole College of Agriculture and Cedara College of Agriculture.
The farm-worker-child exception
The current application form says children of sugarcane farm workers may apply for any field of study and are exempt from the missing-middle requirement. Applicants using that route must still provide the evidence and satisfy the applicable programme conditions.
Do not assume that any family connection with the broader sugar industry creates the same exception. The wording refers specifically to a sugarcane farm worker’s child. If a parent’s role or employment arrangement is unclear, ask SITFE how it should be documented rather than selecting a category that does not accurately describe your circumstances.
Study support and conditions
SITFE offers bursary assistance, but the current application materials do not state a fixed award amount for each applicant. The form also reserves the right to withdraw an award if a student accepts another full bursary or loan. Applicants should disclose other funding accurately and review the eventual agreement before accepting support.
Do not build a personal budget around an assumed stipend or equipment allowance. Ask which costs an individual award would cover, when payment would occur and what academic conditions would apply. Those questions are especially important if registration or accommodation commitments arise before the selection process is complete.
Prepare your documents
The form requires academic records, certified identity evidence, household-income proof, institution application or registration evidence, and relevant sugar-industry-connection documents. A death certificate is requested where a parent is deceased. Read the complete checklist for your study stage.
The initial screening uses Grade 11 final and Grade 12 June results or the latest tertiary record, while the form also asks for final results at the later selection stage. Do not wait until the closing date to clarify how outstanding results should be supplied. An honest explanation of what is still pending is preferable to uploading a substitute document without checking.
Keep originals safely: the application specifically warns against sending original certificates or testimonials because they cannot be returned. Check that every copy can be read and that the evidence supports the income, study and family information on the form.
