RAPCAN Legacy Doctoral Scholarship Opens for Child Protection Research at UCT

RAPCAN Legacy Doctoral Scholarship Opens for Child Protection Research at UCT

The RAPCAN Legacy Doctoral Scholarship is accepting applications through the University of Cape Town for research that contributes to child protection in South Africa. The deadline is 10 November 2026, and the current application instructions require both an online funding application and a separate email containing research and supervisor-support material.

Before gathering the documents, think through how your proposed study fits the opportunity. That will help you prepare a focused concept and have a useful discussion with your supervisor.

Who is eligible?

According to the official RAPCAN scholarship notice, applicants must be full-time South African doctoral students, demonstrate academic excellence at postgraduate level and qualify as financially deserving under UCT’s means test. Research must contribute knowledge about child protection in South Africa. Work that could help prevent child abuse and neglect is particularly encouraged.

The notice does not publish an award amount or a current funding duration. Applicants should obtain those details from the funding office rather than building a budget around figures from older advertisements or another scholarship.

How to apply

  1. Complete the UCT Online Funding Application through the university’s student portal.
  2. Prepare an abstract or concept of your proposed research topic and obtain a letter of support from your supervisor.
  3. Email those documents separately to pgfunding@uct.ac.za.
  4. Use the exact subject line RAPCAN 2027 and complete both steps by 10 November 2026.

UCT’s current postgraduate funding page provides the portal route. It also instructs first-year applicants to submit their UCT admission application before the funding application. Admission and funding are separate decisions, so completing one process should not be treated as confirmation of the other.

Make the research fit clear

A useful concept note should make the proposed contribution understandable to a reader outside your immediate specialisation. Identify the child-protection problem, the gap your study would examine, the proposed method and how the resulting knowledge could be used. This is editorial preparation advice, not an additional list of documents imposed by the scholarship.

For example, a project should explain the relationship between its research question and prevention or protection, rather than relying only on a broad label such as social justice. If the research is centred on a particular community, service or policy, describe that focus accurately without promising outcomes that your study cannot yet establish.

Discuss the concept with your supervisor before requesting the supporting letter. The two documents should describe the same project and stage of development. Check dates, working titles and your UCT student details across the application materials. If a supervisor letter is still outstanding, follow up early enough to complete the submission; the notice does not say that an unsigned promise of a later letter is acceptable.

The scholarship’s background

A UCT account of the first award in 2019 explains that RAPCAN’s board established the legacy scholarship after the organisation closed in 2017. The first recipient researched the intergenerational effects of child sexual abuse. That history illustrates the scholarship’s research purpose, but the historical recipient’s funding arrangement should not be assumed to describe the 2027 award.

Frequently asked questions

Is a particular doctoral discipline required?

No single discipline is prescribed in the current notice. The decisive subject requirement is a contribution to knowledge about child protection in South Africa.

Is an email application enough?

No. The notice requires the UCT online funding application as well as the separately emailed concept and supervisor letter.

Does the current notice specify a stipend?

No. Ask the Postgraduate Funding Office about the amount, covered costs, tenure and any renewal conditions before making financial commitments.

Use the UCT funding noticeboard to check for updates. Keep a copy of the final email and your portal submission record, and direct unresolved application questions to the funding office rather than sending personal documents to unofficial bursary pages.

Another distinct doctoral funding route is the Healthy Futures SA PhD Fellowship; compare its research priorities and eligibility separately.
