UCT Postgraduate Financial Aid Offers Need-Based Study Support for 2027

UCT Postgraduate Financial Aid applications are open

UCT Postgraduate Financial Aid offers contributions towards postgraduate study costs for 2027. Applications close on 10 November 2026. This is needs-based support, not a guaranteed full scholarship: UCT’s current guidelines explicitly exclude merit-only applications for the coming year.

Who meets the basic requirements?

South African citizens and permanent residents applying for full-time Honours, Master’s or doctoral study may qualify. Applicants need at least 70% in their previous qualification and must meet the financial-need assessment. The guidelines define Financial Aid using gross annual family income below R350,000, and GAP tuition support between R350,001 and R600,000. Applicants at an unclear boundary should ask UCT for an assessment rather than assume eligibility.

Important exclusions and funding conditions

Employment exceeding 20 hours weekly excludes applicants. Certain professional and wholly coursework degrees, postgraduate certificates and diplomas, second degrees at the same level, and research components below the specified minimum are excluded. NRF funding cannot be held concurrently. Read the complete guidelines for the precise restrictions affecting your qualification.

How to apply

First-time applicants must submit their UCT academic admission application before seeking funding. Use the PG Online Funding Application in the PeopleSoft Student Portal and provide all assessment documents. Late or incomplete applications are not considered. Existing awards eligible for renewal follow a separate progress-based process; check the official instructions before creating an unnecessary new application.

Prepare an evidence-based financial picture

The following is independent preparation advice, not a substitute for UCT’s document checklist. Begin by listing the people and income sources that the application asks you to disclose. Keep names, dates and amounts consistent across the form and supporting evidence. If circumstances have changed, explain the change accurately and ask which evidence the university accepts. Do not omit an income source because you assume it will disqualify you.

Keep admission and funding decisions separate

An academic application and a funding application serve different purposes. Record the reference details for each and monitor the contact address you used. Acceptance to a degree does not itself confirm that costs will be paid. Before committing to accommodation or other major expenses, establish which decision remains outstanding and what costs you would need to meet yourself.

Build a realistic study budget

Separate tuition, accommodation, transport, equipment and ordinary living costs in your planning. Then compare any eventual award letter with those categories. A contribution towards study may leave a funding gap. Understanding that gap early is more useful than assuming the maximum possible award will be offered. Keep copies of correspondence about payment arrangements and conditions.

Check your submission before the deadline

Review the programme name, intended study year and uploaded documents. Ensure scans are readable and complete, including all pages of an academic record where requested. Save a copy of your final submission and confirmation. If something is unclear, use UCT’s official enquiry channel while there is still time to correct it.
