Healthy Futures SA PhD Fellowship Offers Up to Four Years of Research Support at UCT

The Healthy Futures SA PhD Fellowship at the University of Cape Town is accepting applications until 31 October 2026 at 23:59 SAST. The programme supports doctoral research connected to community health, stronger health systems and more equitable care across Africa. Applicants must complete both the university admission process and a separate fellowship application.

UCT runs the fellowship through its Department of Family, Community and Emergency Care, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation through the Africa Health Collaborative. The application pack, rather than a general scholarship announcement, should guide your submission.

Who can apply?

The official fellowship call allows applications from South African citizens or alumni of an Africa Health Collaborative partner university who are registered, or eligible to register, for a UCT PhD. Applicants must demonstrate academic strength and research potential. They must commit to full-time or structured part-time doctoral study; outside work may not exceed 20 hours a week.

Selection also considers leadership, financial need, community engagement and the likely contribution of the research to policy or practice. Women, young people, people with disabilities and applicants from historically disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds receive preference consideration. The detailed terms describe youth under 35 as advantageous, rather than making that an age limit for every applicant.

What can the fellowship cover?

The award may support tuition, international student fees, accommodation, a living allowance, student medical cover, immigration-related costs, a once-off laptop and equipment, research costs and relevant travel. Research methods courses, leadership development and mentorship are also part of the programme. These benefits depend on approved budgets and applicable policies; the documents do not promise an identical cash package to every fellow.

Support is intended for up to four years. Continuation is reviewed annually and depends on academic progress, reporting, continued UCT registration and available funding. Fellows are expected to submit supervisor-endorsed progress reports twice a year, participate in programme activities and produce policy-relevant outputs, including a final policy brief. Read the official terms of reference before accepting an award.

Research areas

The published themes include community-oriented primary care, health systems, youth empowerment, public health and policy, health innovation and entrepreneurship, health economics, mental health and addiction, emergency and family medicine, rehabilitation, and community engagement. An applicant from another department may be considered when the proposed PhD fits the programme’s priorities.

How to prepare and submit the application

  1. Apply to UCT first. Use the UCT online application portal. The fellowship office does not process academic admission applications. Contact the relevant department about your proposed research and supervisory arrangements.
  2. Read the pack. Download the application guidelines and complete the official HFSA application form.
  3. Assemble the documents. The checklist includes certified identification and academic records, proof of UCT application or registration, a CV of no more than three pages, a separate research proposal of no more than five pages, supervisor support, funding information where applicable, and recent proof of address.
  4. Arrange academic references. Two postgraduate academic referees must send their reports directly to Nomfundo Hlongwa at nomfundo.hlongwa@uct.ac.za. Do not assume that naming referees in the form completes this step.
  5. Email the submission. Send the completed application and supporting material as a single PDF to FACE.Research@uct.ac.za. The form specifies the subject HFSA PhD Application – [Full Name].

The form asks for concise explanations of the proposed study, community impact, policy or practice relevance, financial barriers and leadership. Make these sections consistent with the longer research proposal. A useful final check is whether a reader can identify the problem, proposed method and intended community benefit without guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Must I already have a final admission offer?

You must have applied for UCT admission. The terms prefer a conditional or firm offer at selection, while the form accommodates applicants whose registration is still pending.

Does submitting the application guarantee funding?

No. The programme has a limited number of fellowships, and the application declaration explicitly states that submission does not guarantee an award.

Where can I ask about an unclear requirement?

Use FACE.Research@uct.ac.za and consult the official UCT announcement. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Independent publisher. Reign Gigs is not the fellowship provider and does not accept applications.
