Lindsey Milne Bursary: Agriculture Funding with a Conditional Work Obligation
The Lindsey Milne bursary offers financial assistance for students preparing for careers in South Africa’s subtropical-fruit industry. Its standing rules set an application deadline of 31 October in the year before the funded academic year. Applying that rule to 2027 study gives 31 October 2026.
This is an annual-rule calculation, not a separately dated 2027 announcement. The published application document was updated in December 2024. Applicants should check the current Subtrop bursary page before submitting.
Study fields and funding conditions
The scheme supports BSc Agriculture studies, preferably horticultural science or agricultural economics. Award values are assessed individually. Initial support is for one year, with further funding depending on progress rather than automatic renewal.
The official form and rules include a conditional work obligation: one year with Subtrop for each funded year if a position is available. Where no position is available, that obligation does not apply. Failure to pass can trigger repayment. The scheme itself does not provide postgraduate bursary funding.
Prepare your own motivation
The application asks for a motivation, identity document, Matric certificate, university academic record, a CV of no more than two pages and details of other bursaries or scholarships.
Subtrop expressly asks applicants not to use AI to write the motivation. Write it yourself, explaining your genuine interest and experience. You can organise your thoughts around what attracted you to agriculture, which part of your studies interests you and how you understand the industry. Do not invent farm experience or a career plan you do not hold.
As practical preparation, review your academic projects and identify one that shows relevant curiosity or problem-solving. Keep the description proportionate to your role. If it was group work, explain your own contribution. This can help you present a clearer application without adding unsupported achievements.
Application route
Complete the official form and email it with the required documents to delane@subtrop.co.za. Retain your sent application and check that attachments open correctly. The rules say applicants not contacted by 31 December should regard the application as unsuccessful.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed amount for every student?
No. The award value depends on the individual case.
Does funding continue automatically?
No. Progress is considered when deciding whether support should be extended.
Should I ignore the work-back provision if I plan further study?
No. Read the agreement and discuss your plans with Subtrop before accepting. A future study plan does not remove an existing obligation by itself.
