SARETEC Work Essential Skills: overview

The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre is inviting applications for its Work Essential Skills programme, also called WES. This is a QCTO-approved skills programme carrying 20 credits. It combines theoretical, practical and workshop learning. The entry qualification is NQF Level 1, with preference given to applicants with Matric or their highest qualification as described in the call.

What participants gain

The training focuses on preparing learners for everyday workplace tasks and employee participation. Funding has been made available for the training, but the advertisement does not state a stipend amount. Applicants should not interpret funded tuition or training as confirmation of a cash allowance, transport funding or a permanent job afterwards.

Who can apply

  • Unemployed applicants aged 18–34
  • South African citizens or permanent residents
  • Residents of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality
  • Applicants meeting the NQF Level 1 entry requirement
  • Applicants with no criminal record

Local eligibility matters

This call is specifically for the Cape Town metropolitan area. Living elsewhere in the Western Cape is not automatically sufficient. Check that your residential address falls within the stated municipality and that you can provide the required evidence. SARETEC encourages eligible people with disabilities to apply and states that reasonable accommodation will be provided within the training facility where applicable.

Training schedule

Accepted learners will be divided into groups, with the first scheduled to start on 9 November 2026. Further groups are planned during 2027. The call describes five weeks of training and notes that dates may change for operational reasons. Wait for your allocated group and formal instructions before making firm arrangements based on the first group’s date.

Supporting documents

Prepare your CV, evidence of your residential address and the supporting qualification documents required by the call. Accepted address evidence includes a utility or retail bill no older than three months, a lease agreement, or an affidavit from SAPS. Ensure the documents are legible and reflect your own circumstances; incomplete applications may be disqualified.

How to apply for SARETEC Work Essential Skills

  • Read the Work Essential Skills section of the official SARETEC call page.
  • Check your age, employment status, residence and qualification against that section.
  • Prepare your CV, proof of address and the required supporting documents.
  • Email the application to WES@cput.ac.za, the address named for Sisa Sethi and Grant Melton in the WES call.
  • Review the recipient address and attachments before sending. Keep a copy of the sent application.

Deadline and next steps

The deadline is 18 October 2026. A closing time and timezone are not stated. The published timetable gives 30 October 2026 for communication to applicants. Late or incomplete submissions are excluded. Use the official call page to check for any subsequent changes.

Prepare for the practical commitment

Before applying, consider how you would attend training at SARETEC and whether the planned group dates fit your other commitments. Because the public notice does not specify a stipend or travel allowance, ask the organisers about practical arrangements instead of assuming those expenses are covered. Keep copies of your address evidence and qualification records together so you can respond if further clarification is requested. This preparation advice is separate from the formal eligibility criteria and does not guarantee selection or a particular group allocation.
