Yenching Academy Fellowship Covers Tuition, Accommodation and Monthly Support
Yenching Academy Fellowship support for postgraduate study
The Yenching Academy Fellowship supports a two-year Master’s in China Studies at Peking University. All admitted students receive first-year funding covering tuition, accommodation, basic medical insurance, monthly support, research expenses and a calculated travel allowance for one return journey. The official FAQ does not give a monthly cash amount.
Understand the second-year funding condition
Funding for the second year is not automatic. Students who remain in good academic standing and plan to stay in Beijing may apply for continued tuition, accommodation, insurance and monthly support. Read the award conditions before assuming that every expense throughout both years will be covered.
Who can apply?
International applicants must hold a valid non-Chinese passport and have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, or complete it by August 2027. South African applicants may apply through this route. Selection considers academic achievement, leadership, community engagement, English ability and a strong interest in interdisciplinary China studies. Students and alumni of partner universities must first follow their university’s internal pre-selection process.
Deadline and required documents
The 2027 international application window closes on 30 November 2026 at 09:00 Beijing time. Prepare a personal statement of up to 750 words, research-interest statement of up to 1,500 words excluding citations, CV, transcripts, degree or enrolment evidence, and two academic recommendations. Referees must meet the professor-level and subject-area requirements. Check the official English-test rules and exemptions before submitting.
Prepare a research direction rather than a general ambition
The following is independent application advice. Start with a question you genuinely want to investigate, not a claim that a particular scholarship will change your life. Explain what makes the question important and how sustained postgraduate study could help you examine it. A focused question can show more intellectual direction than a list of unrelated interests. Distinguish what you already know from what you hope to learn.
Connect your experience to your proposed study
Choose examples from your academic work or community involvement that show how you approach problems. Describe your role accurately and avoid taking credit for an entire team’s achievements. When discussing leadership, explain a decision you made, the constraints you faced and what you learned. Keep the research statement and personal statement complementary rather than repeating the same paragraphs.
Give referees enough context
Ask suitable academics early and share your current CV and research interests. This helps them decide whether they can write a relevant recommendation. Do not write or submit a reference in another person’s name. Check that your documents use consistent names and dates, and retain copies of the final files. Submit ahead of the deadline rather than relying on a last-minute upload.
