FAO Food Loss Index course

FAO’s course on SDG sub-indicator 12.3.1.a explains the Food Loss Index and the data needed to monitor it. It is primarily intended for staff and agencies involved in food-loss measurement, data collection, analysis and reporting. Five lessons take approximately 40–55 minutes each.

Topics and certification

Lessons cover the target and indicator, national and global indices, loss-data collection, an estimation model, and monitoring and reporting. Learners earn a digital badge after completing the course and scoring at least 75% on the final exam. The exam link opens the FAO Academy login page.

Free access and technical requirements

FAO’s official help pages confirm that its self-paced courses are free to study online or download. The online version supports current major browsers; this course’s downloadable version runs on Windows PCs. The learning opportunity is not a scholarship, paid role or promise of employment.

How to make the learning useful

The following suggestions are independent editorial guidance, not additional course requirements.

Start with definitions rather than a headline number

When studying an indicator, write down exactly what is being counted and which stage of a process is included. A figure becomes difficult to interpret when its boundary is unclear. Keep terms consistent in your notes and avoid assuming that different reports use the same definitions.

Trace the information behind an estimate

Choose a public example and note the source, period, units and collection method. Identify what is observed directly and what is estimated. This independent exercise helps you read a dataset critically without treating a model output as a complete description of every producer or supply chain.

Keep uncertainty visible

If a source has gaps, record them instead of silently filling them with convenient numbers. Explain which additional information would improve the estimate. In a learning project, a clearly stated limitation is more useful than an apparently precise result whose assumptions cannot be checked.

Apply learning within your role

The course can provide a foundation for discussing measurement with colleagues, but it does not automatically qualify someone to submit official statistics. Follow the procedures and review requirements of the responsible institution. If you create a practice report, label it as an exercise, use authorised or public data, and separate it from official reporting. Keep the badge and a concise summary of your learning for your own record.

How to enrol
