Emalahleni External Bursary Offers Undergraduate Study Support for Local Students
The Emalahleni External Bursary offers study support for qualifying local applicants who want to pursue full-time undergraduate education. The municipality’s current application window closes on 27 November 2026.
This is a targeted municipal opportunity. It is not open merely because someone studies in Mpumalanga: applicants must meet the municipality’s residence, citizenship, age and financial-need conditions.
Emalahleni External Bursary: who can apply?
The notice invites first-time applicants aged 18 to 35 from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants must be South African citizens residing within Emalahleni Local Municipality’s jurisdiction, with proven financial need, and intend to study at an eligible public institution.
The prescribed form includes public universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges. People living with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Meeting the conditions does not guarantee an award; the municipality retains discretion and successful applicants must sign an agreement.
Priority study areas
The notice prioritises fields including engineering, urban and regional planning, chemistry, horticulture, microbiology, environmental management, law, water and sanitation, disaster management, software development, finance, architecture, social science and developmental studies. Compare your precise qualification with the complete official list before submitting.
Do not rename a course to make it appear to match. Use the qualification title shown on the institution’s records and explain its relevance in your own words where the application permits. If the title is unusual or interdisciplinary, ask the bursary office whether it is eligible.
What funding is confirmed?
The official notice confirms a bursary scheme but does not publish a standard award amount or a detailed list of all covered expenses. It expressly excludes pre-existing loans and historical debt. This should not be promoted as guaranteed full funding or a debt-clearance programme.
Before accepting an award, read the actual agreement and compare it with the institution’s costs. Ask which expenses are covered, how payments will work and what academic conditions apply. Keep those questions separate from the application itself: an intention to apply is not authority to assume that costs have been approved.
Prepare the prescribed form and evidence
Use the municipality’s application form, complete it in block letters and provide the required identity, residence, financial-need, admission and academic evidence. The correct academic documents depend on whether you are in Grade 12 or already at a tertiary institution. The form also requests parent or guardian records and details of any other bursary or loan.
Read both the notice and the form. A school learner’s checklist is not identical to the checklist for a second- or third-year student. Check that results are identifiable and complete, that certification is readable, and that the name on the residence evidence matches the applicant’s situation as required.
Use the motivation section to explain your study plans and circumstances accurately. Supporting documents should substantiate your statements, not contradict them. If household income is irregular, explain it through the evidence requested by the municipality instead of inventing a monthly salary figure.

Completed applications must be hand-delivered to the Youth Development Unit, second floor, Civic Centre, Mandela Street, eMalahleni, 1035. The official notice says emailed and faxed applications will not be considered.
