How to prepare a focused accounting application

The guidance below is independent preparation advice. It does not add selection criteria or claim that Eris will assign any particular accounting task.

Put the academic evidence first

Use the exact qualification title and completion status in your education section. Include the institution and dates, and make sure the information agrees with your transcript. If you are waiting for a formal certificate after completing the academic requirements, explain that distinction accurately. Do not describe pending study as a completed award.

Your CV does not need to repeat every module. Select coursework or projects that help demonstrate your analytical and organisational skills. If a result is particularly relevant, include it only when the academic record supports it. Avoid presenting a personal estimate or selected-subject calculation as an official overall average.

Choose an example that demonstrates accuracy

Think of an assignment where you reconciled information, investigated a difference or checked a set of calculations. Explain how you noticed the issue, what you compared and how you verified the correction. A clear account of a small error you resolved can show more than a broad claim that you always produce perfect work.

Keep the example honest about its setting. A simulated company used in coursework is not a real client, and a group assignment is not a paid finance role. Identify what you personally completed and what others contributed. You should be comfortable explaining the method if asked for more detail.

Demonstrate spreadsheet skills with context

List tools you have used for specific tasks rather than attaching an unsupported proficiency label. For example, explain how you organised data, checked formulas or compared alternative assumptions. If you used a template supplied by a lecturer, distinguish using it from building it yourself. That distinction protects the credibility of your application.

For your own preparation, create a small fictional workbook with clearly marked inputs, calculations and outputs. Check that totals reconcile and that a reviewer can follow the logic. Use fictional records only. Do not upload private financial information, identity details or data belonging to a real person or business as an example.

Practise explaining a financial result plainly

Choose a familiar concept from your studies and explain it to someone without an accounting background. Start with what the number represents, the period it covers and the question it helps answer. State the limitations before drawing a strong conclusion. Clear communication is useful evidence of understanding; technical vocabulary alone is not.

Try writing a short note that distinguishes a fact, an assumption and a question needing further investigation. This helps prevent a common application weakness: presenting confidence without showing the basis for it. You do not need to provide financial advice to anyone to demonstrate careful analysis.

Show a method for meeting deadlines

Use an academic or voluntary example with a fixed delivery date. Explain how you broke the task into stages, checked progress and handled an unexpected problem. Focus on actions you took rather than claiming to work well under pressure. If the outcome was imperfect, describe what you would change next time.

A practical preparation habit is to reserve time for review rather than treating the first completed version as final. For a document, that might mean checking names, dates, calculations and attachments separately. Explain how you avoid carrying an error from one version into another.

Make the email easy to process

Use a subject line that identifies the finance internship and your name. Keep the message concise, list the attached documents and use a phone number you can answer. Check that attachments open correctly and that filenames identify their contents. Avoid sending a link that requires the recipient to request access unless the employer explicitly asks for one.

Retain the sent email and the exact documents used. If you later discover a material error, follow the employer’s published contact instructions for correcting it rather than sending several inconsistent versions without explanation.

Eris Finance Internship: frequently asked questions

Should I assume this is a professional training contract?

No. A finance internship and a formally accredited professional training arrangement are different things. Ask for confirmation before relying on any placement to satisfy a professional qualification requirement.

Should I include unrelated work?

Include it briefly if it demonstrates reliability, organisation or communication. Explain its relevance without allowing it to obscure your accounting qualification and strongest evidence.

What should I clarify before accepting?

Ask about remuneration, start date, reporting arrangements, supervision and contract conditions. Do not commit to accommodation or resign elsewhere based only on an application acknowledgement.

Eris Finance Internship: application summary

Build the application around accurate academic information, a clear example of careful analysis and a concise email. Present what you can demonstrate now, and identify the skills you genuinely want to develop.
