The organization is now recruiting Senior Program Officers to lead major grantmaking portfolios. Successful candidates will determine which organizations and programs receive funding, develop long-term grantmaking strategies, assess evidence, evaluate funding opportunities, collaborate with researchers, engage with international partners, and oversee portfolios worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Working alongside Senior Researchers, the successful candidate will evaluate research findings, perform cost-effectiveness assessments, build relationships with implementing organizations, and contribute to transparent public communication about GiveWell’s funding decisions.
Tasks
The selected Senior Program Officer will:
- Lead a major grantmaking portfolio.
- Develop long-term funding strategies.
- Evaluate global health and development programs.
- Analyze quantitative evidence and cost-effectiveness models.
- Make funding recommendations worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
- Build relationships with NGOs, governments, research institutions, and donors.
- Review implementation quality and program performance.
- Mentor and advise team members.
- Communicate research findings publicly.
- Identify emerging high-impact funding opportunities.
- Help design and improve innovative funding mechanisms.
- Support organizational strategy and continuous learning.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
There is no strict academic requirement.
Candidates commonly possess advanced quantitative or analytical degrees, but GiveWell places greater emphasis on demonstrated experience making rigorous, evidence-based decisions under uncertainty.
Experience
Ideal applicants should have:
- Approximately 5–10 years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience managing grants, funding portfolios, or large budgets.

Salary and Benefits
GiveWell offers an outstanding compensation package:
- Up to $308,000 per year (New York City and San Francisco Bay Area)
- $280,000 per year for most other U.S. locations
