Project Background
Wasting affects 45 million children worldwide and is responsible for up to 875,000 deaths every year. The JUNIPr initiative seeks to develop and test sustainable, multisectoral interventions that can prevent wasting across vulnerable communities.
The Bangladesh National Research Partner will co-lead the design phase and potentially serve as a co-principal investigator during implementation. Work will involve formative research, protocol development and ethics submissions.
Consultancy Scope and Goals
The consultancy supports Phase 1 (Design Phase) of the research project, with the possibility of continuing into Phase 2 (Implementation).
Key Goals
- Conduct and guide formative research
- Identify intervention components and delivery models
- Co-develop research protocols for implementation, impact evaluation and costing
- Lead ethics submissions and secure national approvals
- Serve as a core research collaborator with IFPRI and UN partners
Responsibilities
Activity 1: Formative Research
The consultant will work closely with IFPRI and UN agencies to design and execute formative research activities.
Tasks
- Review findings from desk reviews, workshops and secondary data
- Help design tools for 6–10 key informant interviews
- Conduct, analyze and summarize interviews
- Co-lead inception report
- Co-lead design and validation workshops for intervention packages
Activity 2: Protocol Development and Approvals
The consultant will co-develop research protocols for Phase 2.
Tasks
- Draft research protocols for impact evaluation, implementation research and costing
- Submit protocols to national ethics committees
- Secure all required approvals from authorities
- Present protocols where required

Required Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- PhD in nutrition, public health, nutritional epidemiology or related field
- Minimum 10 years of research experience in Bangladesh
- Proven experience with child undernutrition and wasting-related studies
- Experience obtaining ethics and government research approvals
- Capacity to conduct community sensitization and stakeholder engagement
- Experience writing reports, briefs and academic papers
- Strong English communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with randomized controlled trials
- Experience in implementation research
- Familiarity with costing studies
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Senior-level researcher based in Bangladesh
- Capable of assuming co-principal investigator responsibilities
- Strong technical, analytical and qualitative research skills
- Experienced in liaising with government authorities, ethics bodies and UN agencies
- Able to deliver outputs within strict timelines
