Organization Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the foremost global authority on environmental matters, shaping the international environmental agenda, promoting the cohesive implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system, and advocating for the global environment.

In response to the resolution “End plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrument” (UNEP/EA5/L23/REV.1), the United Nations Environment Assembly has called for the establishment of an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC). The committee’s mandate is to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, encompassing both binding and voluntary approaches. This should be based on a comprehensive strategy addressing the entire lifecycle of plastic, considering principles from the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, national circumstances, and capabilities. The position is based at the Nairobi duty station, reporting to the Programme Management Officer in the INC Secretariat. The Associate Programme Officer, under delegated authority, will be responsible for the following: Associate Programme Management Officer at UN

Responsibilities

  • Assist in allocating and coordinating services for calendar and non-calendar meetings, engaging with a diverse range of clients such as Permanent Missions to the UN, UN entities, and stakeholders. Associate Programme Management Officer at UN
  • Support logistics during meetings, including interactive presentations, slide presentations, and virtual platforms.
  • Contribute to the preparation of procedural documents, including meeting agendas, talking points, and other briefing materials.
  • Collaborate with key clients to facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programs/projects.
  • Monitor and analyze specific aspects of program/project development and implementation, identifying issues and recommending corrective actions.
  • Conduct basic research on selected aspects of programs, operations, and other activities, including collecting, analyzing, and presenting statistical data from diverse sources.
  • Provide substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, participating in evaluations, research activities, and studies.
  • Assist in consulting assignments by planning workshops, facilitating interactive sessions, and contributing to the development of action plans.
  • Participate in survey initiatives, contribute to the design of data collection tools, and analyze and interpret responses.
  • Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, such as draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications.
  • Provide administrative and substantive support to meetings, conferences, and outreach activities.

  • Coordinate activities related to budget funding, including program/project preparation, progress reports, financial statements, and related documents/reports.
