Background & Job Description
The United Nations University (UNU) Junior Fellowship Internship Programme 2025 is a competitive opportunity for graduate-level students and young professionals to gain practical experience with the UNU Office of the Rector in Tokyo.
Designed to be dynamic, challenging, and rewarding, the program provides exposure to the work of the UN system and prepares participants for future careers in international development and policy. Fellows benefit from structured orientation, mentoring, and real-world assignments while contributing to UNU’s mission of advancing knowledge for sustainable development.
Internships are offered twice per year:
- Fall term: August – December
- Spring term: February – May
Fellows can participate on-site in Tokyo or remotely.
Tasks For UNU Junior Fellowship Internship Program 2025
As a Junior Fellow, participants support UNU’s work in the following areas:
- Conducting research and drafting policy briefs for institutional development.
- Assisting with project management and planning tools.
- Supporting event coordination, including conferences, workshops, and academic forums.
- Providing logistical and editorial support for meetings and publications.
- Preparing newsletters, reports, and communication materials.
- Engaging in administrative and academic support tasks within the Office of the Rector.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Must be enrolled in or recently graduated (within 2 years) from postgraduate studies (Master’s or PhD).
- Academic background should align with UNU’s work.
Experience
- Under 32 years of age at the time of application.
- Maximum of 5 years relevant work experience.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Strong command of written and spoken English.
- Advanced computer and MS Office skills (knowledge of ICT tools and Excel is desirable).
- Demonstrated interest in the work of the UN and UNU.
Additional Information
- Working Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 9:30–17:30 (Tokyo time).
- Stipend: Monthly stipend provided (includes transportation allowance for on-site fellows).
- Benefits: Access to UNU’s library, gym, and academic events.
- Leave: 1.5 days per month.
- Fellows may work on-site in Tokyo or remotely with their own equipment.
