The United Nations University (UNU) Office of the Rector is accepting applications for the Junior Fellows Internship Programme, a competitive opportunity for graduate-level students and young professionals. This internship, based at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, offers a dynamic, challenging, and rewarding experience designed to provide hands-on exposure to the workings of a United Nations agency.

Interns will gain valuable administrative and research experience while contributing to the work of the Office of the Rector, United Nations University, and the broader UN system. Tasks

Research & Institutional Development

  • Conduct background research and draft executive briefs on key institutional topics.
  • Assist with internal policy development and institutional reports.

Project & Event Coordination

  • Develop project management tools and planning systems.
  • Support the organization of lectures, workshops, conferences, and public events (both online and in-person).
  • Provide logistical support and take minutes during meetings.

Editorial & Communication Support

  • Proofread and copy-edit reports and official documents.
  • Assist in the preparation and dissemination of newsletters, event summaries, and communication materials.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Candidates must be currently pursuing or have recently completed (within two years) postgraduate studies (Master’s or PhD) in a relevant field.

Experience & Skills

  • Under 32 years of age at the time of application.
  • No more than 5 years of work experience in a related field.
  • Fluent English proficiency (written and spoken) is required.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Creative problem-solving and resourcefulness.
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications (experience with ICT tools and Microsoft Excel is an advantage).
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and UNU.

Additional Information

Internship Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Interns are recruited twice per year, with the following terms:
    • Fall Term: Mid-August to Mid-December
    • Spring Term: February to May
  • Junior Fellows work full-time (Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM JST).
  • Interns are entitled to 1.5 days of leave per month.
  • A monthly stipend is provided, including a transportation allowance for commuting to UNU Headquarters.
  • Interns enjoy access to UNU’s library, gym (if available), and academic events.
  • For remote work, candidates must have access to a personal laptop or desktop with a stable internet connection.
