Background & Job Description

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is offering a traineeship opportunity within its Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU). This traineeship provides an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain professional experience in a diverse, multicultural environment while enhancing their understanding of the United Nations system and international diplomacy.

The MDPU is responsible for developing and delivering training activities in collaboration with governments, universities, and international organizations. These training initiatives include specialized online and in-person training programs, field visits, advisory services, and the development of training tools and publications.

UNITAR is seeking a motivated trainee to support the implementation of its training activities, particularly its Field Visits and Online Training Programmes scheduled for July and August 2025. The selected trainee will work full-time at UNITAR headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and will receive a monthly stipend of 900 CHF to cover transportation and miscellaneous expenses. The placement is for six months, allowing the trainee to gain hands-on experience in international training program coordination, logistics, and facilitation.

Tasks

Under the supervision of the Associate Programme Officer at UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit, the trainee will be responsible for assisting in the preparation and execution of various training programs. Primary tasks will include:

  • Logistics Coordination: Managing logistical arrangements before, during, and after training programs, ensuring smooth execution of both in-person and online training sessions.
  • Liaison with Partner Institutions: Engaging with partner organizations, collecting participant data, and preparing essential documents required for program implementation.
  • Training Facilitation: Supporting the delivery of face-to-face training workshops, guided tours, and live online webinars using UNITAR’s e-learning platform.
  • Online Content Management: Assisting in managing content on the virtual learning platform and ensuring materials are updated and accessible for participants.
  • On-Site Support in Geneva: Accompanying groups during their field visits to Geneva, coordinating visits to United Nations agencies, multilateral conferences, and cultural activities.
  • Outreach and Communication: Supporting UNITAR’s communication strategies to enhance outreach, including digital marketing initiatives and partnership development.
  • Training Material Development: Assisting in the creation and improvement of online and physical training materials to enhance the learning experience for participants.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Contributing to post-program evaluation, gathering feedback, and analyzing participant engagement for future program improvements.

The trainee will have an opportunity to develop project management, event coordination, and digital marketing skills while engaging directly with international training initiatives and stakeholders.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated (within the past two years) from an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate degree program in one of the following fields:
    • International Relations
    • Political Science
    • History
    • Law
    • Education
    • Languages
    • Digital Marketing
    • Public Administration
    • A related field
  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic background with a focus on global affairs, diplomacy, or international training programs.

Experience

  • Previous experience in the following areas is highly desirable:
    • Organizing field visits, guided tours, or educational training programs
    • Implementing online training courses or managing virtual events
    • Engaging with international organizations or participating in diplomatic initiatives
    • Assisting in strategic marketing, digital outreach, or social media management
    • Coordinating logistics for large-scale programs or international delegations
  • Candidates must exhibit strong organizational and time-management skills, demonstrating the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced international setting.
  • Familiarity with the United Nations system, international cooperation, and diplomatic frameworks is an asset.
  • Knowledge or experience in using e-learning platforms and digital training tools will be considered an advantage.

Language Requirements

  • Proficiency in English (both written and oral) is required.
  • Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is an asset but not mandatory.

Financial Aspects

  • This traineeship is unpaid; however, a monthly lump sum of 900 CHF will be provided to cover transportation and miscellaneous expenses.
