The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) invites applications for a three-month traineeship under its Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU). This is a unique opportunity for aspiring professionals interested in international relations, multilateral diplomacy, and the UN system to gain first-hand experience working in a multicultural and dynamic environment.

UNITAR’s MDPU develops and delivers specialized training in collaboration with governments, universities, and international bodies. These include online courses, field visits, e-learning programmes, and workshops on multilateralism, diplomacy, and international cooperation.

The selected trainee will be based at UNITAR headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, with the main focus on supporting field visits and online training programmes, especially during July and August 2025. While the position is unpaid in terms of a salary, a monthly stipend of 900 CHF is provided to assist with transportation and miscellaneous costs.


Tasks

Under the supervision of an Associate Programme Officer, the trainee will actively support the preparation and execution of both in-person and virtual training events. Core responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating logistics and arrangements before, during, and after programmes.
  • Liaising with partner institutions and participants.
  • Preparing documentation and participant data.
  • Managing content on UNITAR’s virtual e-learning platform.
  • Facilitating live components via Zoom during online courses.
  • Assisting and accompanying groups during field visits to Geneva.
  • Supporting UNITAR’s communication and outreach strategy.
  • Helping develop and refine training and learning materials.

These tasks provide an excellent gateway into understanding how international capacity-building programmes are designed, delivered, and evaluated.

Qualifications

Education and Certification:

To be eligible, applicants must either:

  • Be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or postgraduate programme in international relations, political science, law, history, education, languages, or a related field;
  • OR be a recent graduate (within the past two years).

Experience:

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Proven organizational skills in logistics, planning, and time management;
  • Experience with field visits, tour guiding, or virtual training events;
  • Familiarity with e-learning platforms and virtual facilitation tools (e.g., Zoom);
  • Comfort in working independently and within diverse, international teams;
  • Understanding of the UN system, global cooperation, and the values of multilateral diplomacy.

Additional Assets:

  • Skills in digital marketing, strategic communications, or partnership management;
  • Existing networks in relevant professional or academic fields;
  • Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is an advantage.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (both written and oral) is required.
  • Knowledge of additional languages, particularly Mandarin, is a plus.

Additional Information

Location and Work Schedule:

  • This is a full-time traineeship based in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Expected start date is June 2025, with flexibility for the exact date.
  • The programme lasts three months, during which the trainee will work five days a week.

Compensation:

  • While the position is not salaried, UNITAR provides a monthly lump sum of 900 CHF to assist with basic costs.
  • Participants will gain valuable hands-on experience, exposure to UN processes, and opportunities to build global networks.
