Background & Job Description
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the UN dedicated to promoting inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States. This mission, articulated in the Lima and Abu Dhabi Declarations, is crucial for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization, and environmental sustainability, directly supporting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 (“Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”). UNIDO operates through technical cooperation, analytical research, normative functions, and partnerships. The Directorate of SDG Innovation and Economic Transformation (IET), where this role is based, is responsible for developing innovative services, strengthening UNIDO’s technical cooperation portfolio, attracting funding, and fostering new partnerships to address global challenges and enhance development impact. The Associate Programme Officer plays a critical supporting role within the IET Directorate, ensuring timely and consistent delivery of results and contributing to UNIDO’s strategic goals.
Tasks
The Associate Programme Officer will work under the guidance of the Managing Director of IET, collaborating closely with colleagues to support the Directorate’s mandate. Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as a focal point for the initialization and monitoring of technical cooperation (TC) projects and programmes within the Directorate, including managing TC allocations, budget preparation, and monitoring implementation.
- Drafting routine and non-routine correspondence, assisting with reporting exercises by preparing papers, statistics, and data for presentations.
- Supporting follow-up activities for general coordination processes with relevant stakeholders to build relationships and engage counterparts in TC project implementation.
- Providing advice and solutions to inquiries regarding budget-related functions, funds distributions, requisitions, and authorizations, in consultation with Financial Services.
- Utilizing ERP/SAP systems to retrieve, validate, analyze, and manage substantive information and TC project/programme data, ensuring accuracy.
- Contributing to and delivering regular progress reports and observation papers based on statistical and research data related to TC trends.
- Assisting efforts with information dissemination aids and tools for promoting the Directorate’s TC work, including publications, newsletters, website articles, and social media activities.
- Providing quality assurance of concepts and projects, consolidating inputs on compliance with UNIDO’s Monitoring and Reporting Policy.
- Assisting in the coordination of various inputs from Divisions and in the preparation and follow-up of global forum events, publications, and other knowledge products.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
An advanced university level degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Economics, Business Administration, Development Studies, Environment, Engineering, or another field relevant to UNIDO’s mandate is required.
Experience
A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience, including some at the international level, involving technical cooperation in developing countries, is required. Proven experience in budget monitoring and financial oversight of technical cooperation projects or programmes, preferably within an international organization or development cooperation context, is also required. Demonstrated experience in using ERP systems (e.g., SAP) or similar platforms to retrieve, validate, analyze, and manage data related to technical cooperation monitoring and reporting is highly desirable. Familiarity with all phases of the project cycle (needs assessment, design, implementation, evaluation), particularly in the context of developing countries, is desirable. Fluency in written and spoken English is required, with working knowledge of other United Nations language(s) being desirable.
Additional Information
This is a fixed-term (100 series) staff appointment at the P-2 level, based in Vienna, Austria. The indicative minimum net annual salary is $85,999 USD.
