Background & Programme Overview

The UNICEF Internship Programme is designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical, on-the-job experience. As a Communications Intern, you’ll work within a team responsible for managing media relations, digital content, and advocacy campaigns. You’ll gain hands-on experience in drafting content for social media, creating compelling visual stories, and supporting strategic communication plans that highlight UNICEF’s work in the field. This remote internship is an ideal way to launch a career in international development and humanitarian communications.


Tasks

As a Communications Intern, your responsibilities will be dynamic and varied. Your tasks may include:

  • Drafting and editing content for UNICEF’s social media channels, newsletters, and official reports.
  • Assisting in the development of communication strategies and advocacy campaigns.
  • Supporting media relations by preparing press releases and media kits.
  • Conducting background research on a variety of global issues related to children’s rights.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme, or have graduated within the past two years.
  • You must have completed at least three years of full-time study prior to the internship start date.
  • Fields of study such as Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, or a related discipline are highly preferred.

Experience

  • No prior professional experience is required. The programme is designed for individuals with a strong academic background and a passion for communications.
  • Previous volunteer work or experience in student organizations is considered an advantage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are essential, with fluency in another UN language (French or Spanish) being a plus.

Additional Information

UNICEF internships are typically paid, with a competitive monthly stipend provided to interns as a contribution towards living expenses. The exact amount can vary based on location and funding, but has been noted to be up to $1,700 per month. Remote internships allow you to work from home with flexible start dates and a duration of between six and twenty-six weeks.
