Background & Programme Overview
The UNFCCC Internship Programme provides a framework for students from diverse academic backgrounds to gain an understanding of the UNFCCC secretariat’s work. As a research intern, you will contribute to ongoing projects related to climate policy, data analysis, and technical support. These internships are designed to enhance your educational experience through hands-on assignments, whether you are working in-person at the secretariat in Bonn, Germany, or remotely from another location, depending on the specific vacancy.
Tasks
Research internships at the UNFCCC are project-based and offer significant exposure to the organization’s work. Your tasks may include:
- Conducting research and preparing background documents for climate negotiations and technical meetings.
- Collecting, analyzing, and presenting data on topics such as gender and climate change, or policy progress.
- Assisting in the drafting of official reports, policy briefs, and other publications.
- Providing support for communication and outreach materials, including web content and social media.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- You must be enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree program or in a master’s or doctoral program at a recognized university at the time of application and for the duration of the internship.
- Studies in a relevant field such as environmental science, international relations, political science, economics, law, or public policy are an asset.
- Fluency in English (both written and oral) is a minimum requirement.
Experience
- No prior professional experience is required, as these internships are designed for students.
- Demonstrated strong analytical, research, and writing skills are highly desirable.
- Familiarity with climate change issues and the UNFCCC intergovernmental process is a significant advantage.
Additional Information
UNFCCC internships are not remunerated, and interns are responsible for all costs, including living expenses, travel, and medical insurance. Internships typically last for a minimum of four months and a maximum of six months.
