Background & Job Description
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) plays a pivotal role in addressing climate change by supporting the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. The organization provides technical and organizational support to global climate negotiations and commitments.
This Junior Professional Officer (JPO) position is within the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) Unit of the Transparency Division, based in Bonn, Germany. The JPO will support climate action efforts related to agriculture, forestry, and land use, contributing to research, policy development, and intergovernmental processes.
This role is sponsored by the Government of Norway and is open exclusively to Norwegian citizens.

Tasks
As a Junior Professional Officer, you will:
- Conduct research and analyze data related to agriculture, forestry, and land use within climate action policies, including Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Long-term Low Emission Development Strategies.
- Support intergovernmental processes, including the Sharm el-Sheikh joint work on climate action implementation for agriculture and food security.
- Review and analyze emerging climate change trends related to forests, contributing to COP30 preparations and follow-up on related outcomes.
- Prepare background papers, reports, analytical notes, and other written materials related to agriculture, forestry, and land use.
- Assist in organizing meetings, technical assessment sessions, and conferences, including preparing agendas, identifying participants, and drafting supporting documents.
- Develop input for reports submitted to intergovernmental bodies on agriculture, forestry, and land use topics.
- Attend and summarize intergovernmental meetings related to climate change, forestry, and agriculture.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in forestry, agriculture, natural resources management, environmental studies, international relations, political science, human geography, or a related field.
- A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered in place of an advanced degree.
Experience
- At least two years of relevant experience in land use and climate change, including research, analysis, and report writing.
- Strong understanding of climate change, nature conservation, and land use issues.
- Fluency in English (oral and written) is required; proficiency in another UN language is an asset.
Additional Information
- The JPO will receive training in research methodologies, intergovernmental processes, and policy development.
- This position offers mentorship and access to in-house training on technical and managerial skills.
- The assignment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance.
