Background & Job Description

The UNESCO Young Professional Programme (YPP) is a prestigious recruitment initiative aimed at attracting talented university graduates and young professionals from non- and under-represented Member States. The program provides an entry point into UNESCO at an early stage of their professional career, offering a structured pathway to develop expertise and contribute to the Organization’s mandate. Young Professionals will gain hands-on experience in various sectors, working alongside seasoned experts on impactful projects that promote education, foster scientific collaboration, protect cultural heritage, and advance freedom of expression globally. This program is instrumental in improving geographical representation and promoting gender parity within UNESCO.

Tasks

Specific tasks will vary based on the assigned sector and project, which could include:

• Contributing to the development and implementation of education programs, policies, and initiatives.
• Supporting scientific cooperation projects, especially in areas like environmental sciences, water management, and social sciences.
• Assisting in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, including tangible and intangible heritage.
• Engaging in communication and information projects, promoting media literacy and access to information.
• Conducting research and analysis, drafting reports, and preparing communication materials.
• Participating in the planning and execution of international conferences, workshops, and events.
• Collaborating with Member States, partners, and civil society organizations.
• Supporting administrative and management functions within an international organization.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

• An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a field related to UNESCO’s mandate (e.g., Education, Culture, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Communication & Information), or in a field related to the management and administration of an international organization.
• Specific degree requirements will be detailed in the individual vacancy announcements.

Experience

• Initial professional experience is an asset, but not always mandatory, as the program targets young professionals at the early stage of their careers.
• Demonstrated interest and commitment to the values and mission of UNESCO.
• Excellent command of either English or French is required. Knowledge of both working languages (English and French) is a strong asset. Proficiency in other UN official languages (Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Chinese) is an additional advantage.
• Strong analytical, drafting, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, international environment and as part of a team.
• Strong motivation and statement of interest that aligns with UNESCO’s objectives.

Additional Information

The UNESCO YPP is highly competitive and operates on a biennial basis, subject to the availability of P-1/P-2 level posts. UNESCO typically recruits up to 20 Young Professionals per biennium. A critical point for applicants is that UNESCO does not accept direct applications for the YPP. Instead, interested candidates must contact their National Commission for UNESCO or Permanent Delegation to inquire about the application procedures at the national level. National Commissions are responsible for disseminating information and pre-selecting candidates from non- and under-represented Member States. The recruitment process involves a screening based on academic qualifications, motivation, language and writing skills, and professional experience, followed by video and panel interviews, and potentially tests to assess competencies and language proficiency.
