Background & Job Description

The UNESCO Internship Programme offers students and recent graduates a practical learning experience within a multicultural, intergovernmental environment. Research Interns will work under the guidance of seasoned professionals, contributing to ongoing projects aligned with UNESCO’s mandate in education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication & information. These internships aim to enhance academic and technical knowledge through hands-on assignments, providing insights into how an international organization operates and addresses global issues like sustainable development, cultural preservation, and scientific progress.

Tasks

Research interns will undertake a variety of tasks tailored to their specific department and project, including but not limited to:

• Conducting in-depth research and analysis on key thematic areas relevant to UNESCO’s work (e.g., climate change, AI ethics, cultural heritage protection, education policy).
• Assisting in the preparation of research papers, policy briefs, reports, and communication materials.
• Collecting, compiling, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to support projects.
• Contributing to the development of new knowledge products and training content.
• Participating in internal meetings, workshops, and international conferences, taking notes and preparing minutes.
• Supporting the planning, implementation, and monitoring of specific research-driven initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

• Must be at least 20 years old at the time of application.
• Must be currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent, second university degree or higher) OR have recently graduated with a Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent) within the past 12 months.
• Candidates with only a completed Bachelor’s degree not enrolled in a graduate program are generally not eligible.
• Strong academic record in a relevant field such as Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Humanities, Education, International Relations, Public Policy, Law, Data Science, or related disciplines.

Experience

• No specific professional work experience is explicitly required, as this is a learning opportunity. However, any relevant academic research, volunteer work, or previous internships will be a strong asset.
• Excellent command, both written and spoken, of either English or French is mandatory. A working knowledge of the other language is a significant advantage.
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency in office-related software and potentially research-specific tools.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural team, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to UNESCO’s values.

Additional Information

The UNESCO Internship Programme typically lasts between 1 and 6 months. While UNESCO’s general policy states internships are unpaid, it’s crucial to check individual vacancy announcements on the UNESCO Careers Portal, as some specific roles or locations may offer a monthly stipend (e.g., the UNESCO GEM Report Fellowship for postdoctoral studies offers a stipend). Interns are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, visa costs (if applicable), and comprehensive health insurance valid for the entire internship duration. UNESCO does provide limited workplace accident insurance.
