Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the global authority on environmental issues, setting the agenda for sustainable development within the UN system. The Economy Division of UNEP focuses on promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns, efficient use of natural resources, and safe management of chemicals. The Programme Management Assistant will support the implementation of the global electric mobility project within the Economy Division, Chemicals and Health Branch, Sustainable Mobility Unit, based at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi.

UNEP Hiring: Programme Management Assistant


  • Programme/Project Coordination: Assist in planning and preparation of electric mobility programmes/projects. Monitor programme/project proposals and document status.
  • Data Management: Compile, summarize, and present information/data on electric mobility programmes/projects. Enter data on project delivery, draft status reports, and identify delivery shortfalls or budget overruns.
  • Financial Oversight: Review project documents, especially cost plans/budgets, for compliance with rules and procedures. Monitor budget revisions and ensure fund availability.
  • Administrative Support: Provide general office support, respond to inquiries, review incoming correspondence, and maintain records/files. Organize meetings and workshops.
  • Training and Guidance: Assist in training and providing guidance to new/junior staff members.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Collect and analyze data, prepare presentations and reports for decision-making and information sharing.
  • Information Management: Assist in updating web pages, brochures, and other information materials.
  • Additional Tasks: Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Professionalism: Understanding of sustainable mobility programme/project administration, technical cooperation, programming, and budgeting. Ability to work with figures, conduct basic research, and gather information. Demonstrated ability in data analysis, modeling, and decision-making support.
  • Teamwork: Collaborates effectively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Values input from others, supports team decisions, and shares responsibilities.
  • Planning and Organizing: Sets clear goals, identifies priorities, allocates resources, and monitors progress. Anticipates risks and adjusts plans as necessary. Uses time efficiently.

Education and Experience

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional training in Environment Studies, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policies, Engineering, Economics, or related fields is desirable.
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 5 years of work experience in programme or project administration. Experience can be reduced to 3 years with a first-level university degree or higher. Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and sustainable mobility projects is required. Experience in electric mobility projects is desirable.
  • Languages: Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.


Qualified candidates may undergo a substantive assessment, such as a written test, followed by a competency-based interview.
