The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization that works tirelessly across 170 countries to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and build resilience, helping nations make lasting progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the heart of this transformative work is the Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (ICPSD), a specialized UNDP unit that focuses on leveraging the private sector’s role in development. And now, UNDP is looking for a dynamic, motivated GIS Fellow to join the team remotely and contribute to the digital transformation of sustainable development efforts.

Why This Fellowship is a Game-Changer

The UNDP GIS Fellowship is not just a regular role. It’s an opportunity to shape the future of development using frontier technologies. As the selected fellow, you’ll be part of the SDG AI Lab, a hub for innovation that supports UNDP’s internal teams and global partners. This lab is leading the charge in applying advanced digital solutions like GIS, AI, and Machine Learning to solve complex issues related to poverty, climate change, disaster response, and more.

From day one, you will be involved in exciting projects where you will analyze geospatial data, create impactful visualizations, and develop AI-powered solutions to address global challenges. Your work will directly support the achievement of SDGs, making a tangible impact on the lives of people worldwide.

But that’s not all – the fellowship also offers a deep dive into research, knowledge product development, and collaborative work with leading data scientists and experts. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enhance your skills, expand your global network, and drive meaningful change—all while working remotely!

What You’ll Be Doing: Key Responsibilities

As a GIS Fellow, your role will revolve around two primary areas: research and digital solutions development. Here’s a closer look at the tasks and responsibilities that will define your fellowship:

1. Research and Knowledge Development (30% of your time)

Your research will focus on how GIS, Remote Sensing, and Machine Learning can be applied to global development issues. You’ll be expected to:

  • Conduct research on the application of these technologies to development challenges.
  • Draft analytical briefs summarizing findings, making the content accessible to a general audience.
  • Maintain and acquire data that fuels the SDG AI Lab projects.

By contributing to these research efforts, you will help uncover new ways to tackle global challenges and provide the UNDP with actionable insights that could revolutionize how we approach development projects.

2. Development of Digital Solutions for the SDGs (60% of your time)

This is where you get to flex your technical muscles. Using advanced geospatial data processing and GIS software like QGIS and ArcGIS, you’ll work on building, maintaining, and improving analytical tools and large datasets. Specifically, you will:

  • Develop maps, infographics, and cartographic products that support the visualization of critical data.
  • Use Machine Learning to develop solutions that target economic and international development issues.
  • Oversee the entire GIS project lifecycle, from concept to implementation, ensuring that every detail is accounted for.

With these tasks, you’ll not only hone your skills in GIS and Machine Learning, but you’ll also see firsthand how these tools can make a monumental difference in development work.

3. Additional Support (10% of your time)

To round out your fellowship, you’ll support the SDG AI Lab’s Volunteer Data Scientists Initiative, which connects UNDP teams with volunteer data scientists to address pressing development challenges. This will involve attending meetings, conferences, and assisting in project coordination. You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to the volunteer engagement in SDG-related projects, helping to mobilize passionate experts for a worthy cause.
