What You’ll Be Doing: Key Responsibilities
As a GIS Fellow, your role will revolve around two primary areas: research and digital solutions development. Here’s a closer look at the tasks and responsibilities that will define your fellowship:
1. Research and Knowledge Development (30% of your time)
Your research will focus on how GIS, Remote Sensing, and Machine Learning can be applied to global development issues. You’ll be expected to:
- Conduct research on the application of these technologies to development challenges.
- Draft analytical briefs summarizing findings, making the content accessible to a general audience.
- Maintain and acquire data that fuels the SDG AI Lab projects.
By contributing to these research efforts, you will help uncover new ways to tackle global challenges and provide the UNDP with actionable insights that could revolutionize how we approach development projects.
2. Development of Digital Solutions for the SDGs (60% of your time)
This is where you get to flex your technical muscles. Using advanced geospatial data processing and GIS software like QGIS and ArcGIS, you’ll work on building, maintaining, and improving analytical tools and large datasets. Specifically, you will:
- Develop maps, infographics, and cartographic products that support the visualization of critical data.
- Use Machine Learning to develop solutions that target economic and international development issues.
- Oversee the entire GIS project lifecycle, from concept to implementation, ensuring that every detail is accounted for.
With these tasks, you’ll not only hone your skills in GIS and Machine Learning, but you’ll also see firsthand how these tools can make a monumental difference in development work.
3. Additional Support (10% of your time)
To round out your fellowship, you’ll support the SDG AI Lab’s Volunteer Data Scientists Initiative, which connects UNDP teams with volunteer data scientists to address pressing development challenges. This will involve attending meetings, conferences, and assisting in project coordination. You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to the volunteer engagement in SDG-related projects, helping to mobilize passionate experts for a worthy cause.
