Job Description:

Office/Unit/Project Description:

UNDP serves as a knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development within the UN Development System. The Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) plays a crucial role in developing policy and guidance to support UNDP’s Strategic Plan. BPPS Communications supports senior management and policy teams within the bureau in effectively coordinating and communicating results to external audiences, promoting UNDP’s global mandate and thought leadership on sustainable development issues.

Scope of Work:

The Social Media Specialist, under the supervision of the BPPS Communications Specialist, will be responsible for enhancing the visibility of UNDP’s work on digital platforms. The incumbent will develop engaging visual assets to communicate knowledge and results produced under the policy and programme work. Key tasks include designing a social media strategy, creating compelling content, measuring web and social media performance, and contributing to general communications tasks as required.

Key Tasks/Deliverables:

  1. Social Media Strategy Design and Delivery:
    • Develop a social media strategy aligned with BPPS communications workplan and UNDP External Engagement Plan.
    • Maintain, monitor, and engage with selected social media platforms.
    • Develop and maintain a Trello calendar of social media content aligned to key moments, themes, and issues of priority for BPPS.
  2. Content Creation:
    • Research, edit, write, and develop high-impact social media content, including copy, graphics, videos, and multimedia formats.
    • Develop complete social media kits for key moments and campaigns to increase visibility of UNDP’s work.
    • Measure the impact of the social media strategy and adjust activities to maximize impact according to evolving trends and technology.

  3. Measure Web and Social Media Performance:
    • Produce regular analytics reports for web and social media, including campaigns and monthly/yearly reporting.
    • Use different tools to measure the impact of the social media strategy and adjust activities accordingly.
  4. Additional Communications Tasks:
    • Create infographics, presentations, and other communication materials as needed.
    • Contribute to editing and fine-tuning think pieces, press releases, blogs, and stories.
    • Facilitate uploading and dissemination of statements, press releases on the UNDP website.
    • Design internal newsletters and policy messages for dissemination to internal/external UNDP audience.

Institutional Arrangement:

The Social Media Specialist will report to the BPPS Communications Specialist and be an active member of the wider BPPS communications team. The Specialist will also participate in regular UNDP Global Policy Network Communications Team meetings. If travel is required, it will be at UNDP’s expense and processed in accordance with UNDP’s travel guidance and policy.

Minimum Qualifications of the Successful IPSA:

Min. Education Requirements:

  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in journalism, communications, digital communications, or related field.
  • OR, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the above-mentioned fields of study, combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience.

Min. Years of Relevant Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years (with master’s degree) or seven (7) years (with bachelor’s degree) of professional experience producing digital communications content and advocacy material via various media.

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience of social media-friendly video production.
  • Proficiency and experience in graphic design, video production/editing, and/or animation using software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience in providing support and guidance on the production and dissemination of communication products.
  • Experience in web-based management systems and advanced knowledge of office software packages.

Desired Skills:

  • Prior experience with UNDP or familiarity with the UN system.
  • Working knowledge of other UN languages.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Working knowledge of other UN languages will be an asset.
