The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is seeking a Data Science Fellow to contribute to the deployment of frontier technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Large Language Models (LLMs) in addressing global development challenges.
The selected candidate will work under the SDG AI Lab, a joint initiative of the UNDP Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) team, hosted under the Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (ICPSD). The SDG AI Lab provides research, development, and advisory support in AI, ML, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to strengthen digital transformation efforts.
This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in data acquisition, analysis, modeling, deployment, and visualization for sustainable development.

Tasks
1. Research & Data Acquisition (30%)
- Conduct research on the application of NLP and LLMs in development issues.
- Draft analytical briefs summarizing findings and methodologies for a general audience.
- Maintain and acquire data for the SDG AI Lab’s projects.
2. Development & Implementation of NLP/LLM Solutions (60%)
- Develop NLP and LLM solutions to address economic and international development challenges.
- Support the team in implementing and managing NLP/LLM solutions.
- Document the complete NLP/LLM project implementation process.
3. Support & Engagement (10%)
- Assist the Technical Specialist in meetings, conferences, and administrative tasks.
- Contribute to the SDG AI Lab’s Volunteer Data Scientists Initiative to engage volunteers in SDG-related projects.

Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s or postgraduate program in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Econometrics, Mathematics, Economics, or a related field.
Experience:
- Strong understanding of LLM theory, foundation models, and deep learning principles.
- Proficiency in Prompt Engineering, LLM fine-tuning, and technologies such as LangChain and Semantic Kernel.
- Experience with machine learning frameworks (Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Hands-on experience with NLP tools such as NLTK, SpaCy, Bert, GPT-3, and RoBERTa.
- Proficiency in Python programming and SQL.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau is an asset.
- Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Turkish is an asset.
Additional Information
- Start Date: February 18, 2025
- Duration: 6 months
- Location: Home-based (No relocation required)
- Work Schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week)
- Compensation: Monthly stipend (not a salary, no entitlements for dependents/family)
- Employment Expectation: No expectation of employment with UNDP after the fellowship
