This program prepares individuals to assist Train Drivers with the handling of locomotives and cargo across various train types. Tasks
- Assist the Train Driver with starting, handling, and monitoring different types of trains
- Conduct brake tests and pre-trip inspections
- Prepare and maintain locomotive equipment
- Handle shunting, loading, and unloading tasks in sidings
- Monitor communication devices and signal safety compliance
- Perform emergency duties and protect the train during incidents
- Maintain accurate train journals and assist with admin duties
- Follow strict safety and rail operations procedures

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
- Minimum age of 21 years for train control duties (as per SANS 3000 standards)
- Minimum height of 1.6 meters
- Medical fitness, including vision, hearing, and psychomotor testing (Vienna Testing System)
Experience
- No prior rail work experience required
- Must be able and willing to complete functional training for Train Assistant duties
