Background & Job Description
The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, is offering an exciting fellowship program designed to strengthen research capacity among young African scholars. The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship targets recent PhD holders with a passion for impactful research and academic excellence.
This initiative will support 42 fellows to conduct research hosted by ARUA’s 13 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) across various disciplines. The fellowship is structured to last six months, running between July 2025 and June 2026. Each CoE will host a maximum of four fellows, and all placements will be finalized by December 2025.
Tasks
- Conduct high-quality, original research aligned with the chosen ARUA Centre of Excellence
- Engage with mentors and peers at host institutions
- Participate in research seminars, workshops, and other academic events
- Prepare and present research findings at the end of the fellowship
- Contribute to publications, collaborative projects, or policy briefs where applicable
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Must hold a PhD in a relevant field at the time of application
- Strong academic background and research interests matching the CoE focus areas
Experience
- Demonstrated research capability through publications or writing samples
- Prior involvement in research relevant to the selected Centre of Excellence is an advantage
- Applicants must be no older than 35 years by the time of application
- At least 70% of fellowship spots are reserved for female candidates
