Shoprite, one of South Africa’s largest retail chains, is addressing youth unemployment through two impactful initiatives:
- The Retail Readiness Programme (RRP)
- The Youth Employment Services (YES) Programme
These programmes are designed to help young South Africans (ages 18–34) gain practical retail skills, work experience, and recognized qualifications—giving them a head start in the retail industry and beyond.
Tasks
Retail Readiness Programme (RRP)
The RRP gives participants basic training in retail work through:
- 5 weeks of hands-on retail training in stores
- 2 weeks of theoretical training covering retail operations and customer service
- Earning an NQF Level 3 qualification upon successful completion
This programme prepares candidates for roles in entry-level retail and lays the foundation for future promotions or jobs in the sector.
Youth Employment Services (YES) Programme
The YES Programme offers:
- 12 months of paid retail work experience
- Roles across various departments such as customer service, stock control, merchandising, and more
- Broad exposure to the retail business environment
- Post-programme confidence and experience to pursue permanent jobs or launch small businesses

Qualifications
Education and Certification
To qualify for the RRP or YES Programme, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens, aged 18 to 34
- Hold a Matric certificate (Grade 12) or an equivalent qualification
Additional Requirement for YES Programme:
- Must have completed the Retail Readiness Programme (RRP)
Experience
- No work experience is needed for RRP.
- YES is ideal for those who have completed RRP and are ready for 12 months of job-based learning.
