Background & Job Description
The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) Phase V is a government-backed effort aimed at helping unemployed youth in South Africa. Through this program, young people are placed in public schools as Education or General School Assistants. The aim is to support learning and school operations while giving youth real work experience, skills training, and a monthly stipend.
This initiative is part of the broader Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), coordinated through the SAYouth.mobi platform and supported by the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator.
Tasks
Education Assistants (EA)
If selected as an Education Assistant, you will support teachers and learners in the classroom. Roles include:
- Curriculum Assistants – Assist with lesson preparation and classroom resources.
- Reading Champions – Help learners improve their reading and comprehension.
- e-Cadres – Support the use of ICT tools and digital learning in class.
- Care & Support Assistants – Offer emotional support to learners.
- Laboratory Assistants – Assist with science practicals and equipment.
- Workshop Assistants – Help in technical subjects and workshops.
A matric certificate is required for all Education Assistant positions.
General School Assistants (GSA)
If you enjoy practical tasks, GSA roles might suit you. These include:
- Handymen/Women – Help with basic maintenance and repairs.
- Cleaners – Keep school facilities clean and hygienic.
- Sports & Enrichment Assistants – Support physical education, arts, and cultural activities.
Some GSA roles do not require a matric certificate.

Who Can Apply?
To qualify for the SAYouth Teacher Assistant Jobs 2025, you must:
- Be a South African citizen aged 18–34
- Be currently unemployed
- Not be enrolled in school or tertiary studies
- Not be receiving NSFAS
- Live within 5 km of a public school (or 30 km for rural/farm areas)
- Own a valid South African ID or permit
- Have a cellphone number and bank account
- Not have participated in previous PYEI Phases I–III
