Background & Job Description
The SAYouth Teacher Assistant Program 2025 is a national initiative by the Department of Basic Education in partnership with SAYouth.mobi, part of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention. It is designed to offer paid school assistant roles to unemployed youth, helping reduce youth unemployment and enhance future employability.
From 22 April to 9 May 2025, eligible applicants can apply online to assist in public schools around the country. This short-term role runs from 2 June to 30 November 2025 and includes a monthly stipend of R4,000. Assistants will help teachers, support learners, and gain valuable workplace skills.
Tasks
As a teacher assistant, your role may include:
- Helping in the classroom with teaching support, lesson planning, and student assistance.
- Working one-on-one with learners to improve focus and understanding.
- Keeping the environment clean and organized to support learning.
- Helping with after-school activities like reading clubs, arts, and sports.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- A matric certificate is useful but not required.
- A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) may be required during shortlisting.
Experience
- No previous job experience is required.
- Experience in volunteering or youth programs is an added advantage.
Additional Information
To apply, you must:
- Be a South African citizen aged 18–34 (must not turn 35 before March 2026).
- Live within 5 km of a school, or within 30 km in rural areas.
- Not be in school, training, or employed at the time of application.
- Have a bank account in your name.

Contract Duration: 2 June 2025 – 30 November 2025
The program also welcomes applications from youth with disabilities and offers full support for their participation.
