About the Role: The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) offers an exceptional opportunity for individuals passionate about digital transformation to join us as a Digital Economy Research Intern. In this role, you will contribute to advancing digital transformation efforts across Africa. Under the guidance of the Technology and Innovation Section (TIS) within the Science, Technology, and Innovation Division, you will engage in policy research, technical support, and advocacy focused on the digital economy. This internship provides a unique platform to collaborate with stakeholders, analyze digital trends, and propose innovative solutions that drive digital growth across the continent.

es and Responsibilities: As a Digital Economy Research Intern, your responsibilities will span across various domains, including:

  1. Research and Analysis:
    • Collaborate with the team to collect and analyze data pertaining to the digital economy landscape in Africa.
    • Conduct in-depth research on digital trends, industry best practices, and regulatory frameworks.
    • Explore innovative solutions to enhance digital engagements with member states, regional organizations, private sector entities, and non-governmental organizations.
    • Assist in preparing comprehensive reports on the digital economy, covering topics such as e-commerce, digital trade, financial technology (fintech), and emerging technologies.
    • Highlight achievements, identify challenges, and outline opportunities for sustainable growth in the digital sphere.
  2. Technical Support:
    • Play a pivotal role in designing and executing programs under the Digital Center of Excellence.
    • Contribute to initiatives focused on Digital ID & Interoperability, aimed at fostering seamless digital integration across sectors.
    • Participate in capacity-building activities targeted at students and teachers, including collaborative programs with industry partners such as Google.
    • Support the implementation of the Connected African Girls coding camp initiative, empowering young women to excel in the digital realm.
  3. Content Creation and Management:
    • Leverage your creativity to generate compelling digital content, including infographics, social media posts, and blog articles.
    • Promote ECA’s initiatives and accomplishments through various digital channels, fostering greater awareness and engagement.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the accuracy, relevance, and timeliness of content published on ECA’s website.
    • Contribute to the development of multimedia resources that effectively communicate complex concepts related to the digital economy.

Qualifications and Special Skills: To excel in this role, you should possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • Enrollment in or completion of a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent), or in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in research methodologies, with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to the digital economy.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is advantageous.
  • Adeptness in navigating digital platforms and tools, including social media, content management systems, and data visualization software.
  • Familiarity with digital trends, e-commerce platforms, financial technology solutions, and emerging technologies is desirable.

Internship Details:

  • This internship is an unpaid opportunity provided by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
  • Interns are responsible for covering all expenses related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses during the internship period.
