Background & Job Description
The General Secretariat of the Council (GSC) runs an annual traineeship programme that offers young graduates first-hand insight into the functioning of the Council and the wider EU institutions. Each year, around 100 trainees are selected to join different departments and work alongside experienced staff.
The aim of the traineeship is to:
- Support education and vocational training for EU citizens.
- Offer practical exposure to European Council and Council operations.
- Build professional and multicultural experience in an international environment.
Traineeships are primarily based in Brussels and are designed to give participants a comprehensive understanding of EU policy, procedures, and collaboration.
Tasks
Trainees will be expected to:
- Assist with research, drafting reports, and preparing documentation.
- Participate in meetings, working groups, and briefings.
- Support daily operations within their assigned department.
- Gain exposure to EU policies, administration, and communication.

Education and Certification
- Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree (BA level or higher) by the closing date of application.
Experience and Skills
- Strong command of English or French (C1 level minimum required).

- Open to graduates from diverse fields including political science, law, economics, international relations, communications, or similar areas.
- No previous work experience required, but motivation and interest in EU affairs are essential.
