Background & Job Description

AFGRI is inviting applications for its 2025 Apprenticeship Programme, designed for South African matriculants who are ready to launch a skilled trade career in agricultural engineering. This programme provides a structured three-year pathway, including technical and theoretical training that leads to qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic.

This opportunity is only open to recent Matric certificate holders. A separate recruitment process for other applicants will follow later in 2025.


Tasks

Apprentices accepted into this programme will be trained to:

  • Repair and maintain agricultural and earthmoving machinery.
  • Gain product-specific knowledge, including John Deere systems.
  • Assist in stock control and parts management.
  • Deliver basic customer service within a workshop environment.
  • Support daily operations and general duties in the workplace.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

Applicants must meet one of the following academic requirements:

Option 1: N2 Certificate with the following:

  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Diesel Trade Theory
  • PLUS one of: Industrial Electronics, Engineering/Technical Drawing, or Motor Trade Theory

Option 2: Matric Certificate with any of the following:

  • Mathematics (Not Mathematical Literacy)
  • Technical Mathematics
  • Physical Science or Technical Science
  • Engineering Graphics and Design

If you do not meet the full N2 qualification, AFGRI provides further education support as part of the programme.

You also need:

  • A valid South African driver’s license
  • Basic computer, admin, and communication skills

Experience

  • No prior work experience is required.
  • Motivated school-leavers with a passion for technical careers are encouraged to apply.

Additional Information

  • The programme starts with a 6-month probation period.
  • Training is free if all subjects are passed; failed modules must be repeated at your own cost.
  • A work-back agreement is required: you must remain with AFGRI for the duration equivalent to your training.
  • The maximum contract duration is 4 years.
