This Research Assistant position is located within Cluster 4 (Statistics, the information society and technology) at ESCWA. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting ESCWA’s efforts to assess Arab countries’ progress towards digital transformation and the implementation of the SDGs. Through your research and data analysis skills, you will contribute to the development of data-driven policy solutions that address critical challenges faced by the region.

A Day in the Life of a Research Assistant

As a Research Assistant, your tasks will be multifaceted and engaging. You will collaborate closely with the Cluster Lead and other team members, assisting with various research projects and data analysis initiatives. Here’s a glimpse into some of your potential responsibilities:

  • Data Collection and Analysis Expert: You will be responsible for collecting and validating data from Arab countries on various topics related to digital transformation and SDG implementation. You will then analyze this data and prepare clear and concise reports to inform decision-making.
  • Country Analysis Specialist: You will play a key role in conducting country analyses, summarizing data and findings, and preparing presentations to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Data Management Champion: You will ensure the accuracy and integrity of data by sorting, consolidating, extracting, and processing data for entry into relevant databases.
  • Information Specialist: You will assist in monitoring developments and trends related to digital transformation and SDGs. This might involve conducting research, compiling information from various sources, and preparing summaries for senior staff.
  • Statistical Specialist: You will assist with data quality control, ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and validity of data sets used by ESCWA.
  • Reporting and Visualization Expert: You will develop various reports, presentations, tables, charts, and graphs to effectively communicate complex data and research findings.
  • Knowledge Management Contributor: You will contribute to knowledge management initiatives by preparing abstracts and bibliographic descriptions for ESCWA publications.
  • Database Management Specialist: You will assist with maintaining and updating relevant computerized databases used by ESCWA.
  • Communication and Meeting Support: You will take notes and draft summaries of meetings, ensuring clear communication and documentation.
  • Dissemination Champion: You may have the opportunity to assist with collecting and disseminating relevant UN and media information to raise awareness about critical issues.
  • Public Awareness Specialist: In some cases, you may be involved in coordinating press briefings or developing public awareness campaigns.

The Ideal Candidate: A Highly Skilled and Motivated Research Assistant

To excel in this role, you will possess a strong foundation in the following areas:

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A university degree in a relevant field (technology, computer science, engineering, statistics, economics, or a related field) is desirable.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social, economic and digital development and SDGs is required. Candidates with a university degree may qualify with three years of experience.
  • Experience in the Arab Region: Experience working on research projects related to the Arab region is desirable.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is desirable.
  • Languages: Fluency in English and Arabic is required. Experience with French is an asset.
  • Competencies: The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to the UN’s values, including professionalism, teamwork, and technological awareness. You will also demonstrate a keen interest in research and data analysis, with a commitment to accuracy and detail.
