Background & Job Description
UNOPS, an operational arm of the United Nations, is looking to recruit an experienced Environmental and Social Risk Management Specialist. This specialist will work remotely to support the Technical Services Unit (TSU) in managing environmental and social risks for UNOPS projects, focusing on Francophone Africa. This position will involve the creation of environmental risk management systems and supporting project teams in implementing and monitoring these systems across multiple regions. The consultant will also play a crucial role in enhancing UNOPS’s capacity for environmental and social risk management.

Tasks
- Assist in designing and implementing environmental and social risk management systems for various projects, particularly in alignment with donor requirements.
- Support the preparation of site-specific environmental and social instruments for project teams.
- Monitor and report on the implementation of risk mitigation measures.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure proper risk categorization and implement environmental corrections when needed.
- Conduct training and capacity-building on environmental and social risk management tools for UNOPS personnel and project teams.
- Prepare E&S risk management reports, ensuring that appropriate mitigation measures are proposed and implemented.
- Oversee the management of specialist retainers to prepare required E&S instruments for specific projects.
- Provide strategic advice on E&S issues to project teams, ensuring compliance with UNOPS obligations and guidelines.

Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Social Science, or a related field is required.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in environmental and social risk management analysis and implementation.
- At least 2 years of experience with the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework is required.
- Experience with rural infrastructure projects is preferred.
- Previous work experience in East and Southern Africa will be an advantage.
Languages:
- Fluency in both English and French is required.
Additional Information
- Contract Type: Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA) Retainer.
- Contract Level: LICA Specialist-10.
- Duration: 12 months, renewable based on satisfactory performance and funding availability.
- Duty Station: Home-based, with travel requirements as needed.
