In conflict-affected regions like Syria, UNFPA’s work is more crucial than ever, providing lifesaving services and empowerment initiatives to vulnerable populations, especially women and children affected by GBV.
Position Overview:
As an International Gender Consultant, you will be instrumental in ensuring the effective operation of the Family Protection Unit (FPU) shelter in Rural Damascus. The FPU serves as a vital refuge for survivors of GBV, offering a comprehensive package of reproductive health and GBV services. Your role will involve providing strategic direction, ensuring quality standards, and promoting beneficiary participation in shelter activities.

Key Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities as an International Gender Consultant will include:
1. Strategic Direction:
- Providing leadership and management support to the FPU shelter.
- Developing and implementing effective shelter strategies in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Setting clear objectives and indicators for shelter activities and monitoring progress.
2. Program Implementation:
- Collaborating with the UNFPA Gender team, local NGOs, and the Syrian Commission for Family Affairs and Population (SCFAP) to implement shelter interventions.
- Collecting and analyzing data to assess the impact of shelter services on GBV survivors.
- Ensuring accurate and timely reporting of shelter activities according to donor requirements.
3. Capacity Building:
- Supporting the development of proposals for GBV survivors shelters.
- Reviewing and finalizing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the code of conduct for the shelter.
- Providing training and capacity-building support to shelter staff and partners.
4. Advocacy and Communication:
- Enhancing UNFPA visibility through the preparation of case studies, factsheets, and other informative materials.
- Documenting lessons learned and best practices to improve the quality of shelter services.
- Participating in GBV sub-sector and protection sector meetings to facilitate referrals to the FPU.
Qualifications and Experience:
To qualify for this role, you should have:
- An advanced degree or equivalent in gender studies, social sciences, or related fields.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in GBV shelter management.
- Experience in projects related to negative social behavior change and gender stereotypes.
- Knowledge of the UN system, the Cluster Approach, and the Transformative Agenda.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Fluency in English; working knowledge of Arabic is essential.
