The United Nations (UN) is committed to fostering multilingualism and effective communication across its global operations. As part of this mission, the Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU) under the Capacity Development and Operational Training Services (CDOTS), Office of Support Operations (OSO), Department of Operational Support (DOS) offers a range of language learning programs. To enhance its English language training capabilities, the UN seeks part-time English language teachers to support staff members in achieving their communication goals.

These part-time roles offer a flexible yet impactful way to contribute to the UN’s vision. Teachers will work on both course delivery and curriculum development, ensuring high standards of language instruction. They will engage with a diverse set of learners, from various cultural and professional backgrounds, creating an enriching teaching experience.

The position is available either in New York or remotely, providing educators with the flexibility to work from different locations. Contracts are typically limited to nine months within any twelve-month period, aligning with the UN’s language learning calendar and specific pedagogical needs.

Tasks

The selected part-time English language teachers will be responsible for:

  • Course Preparation & Delivery: Teaching English language courses across multiple levels in various modalities, including in-person, online, and hybrid formats.
  • Assessment & Feedback: Administering and grading assignments, exams, and other evaluation tasks while providing timely feedback.
  • Student Progress Monitoring: Tracking learner development and offering personalized strategies for improvement.
  • Curriculum Development: Creating new English language learning materials and courses tailored to the UN’s linguistic and communicative requirements.
  • Language Project Contributions: Assisting in the design and enhancement of communicative skills courses.
  • Technology Integration: Utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle and other digital tools to enhance language instruction.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

Candidates should possess:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in language studies, applied linguistics, education, pedagogy, communication, or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree plus an additional two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Post-degree training in second or foreign language teaching is highly desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of experience teaching English as a foreign or second language to adults in multicultural settings (corporate, academic, or professional environments).
  • At least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, exam design, or language teacher training.
  • Experience in e-learning tools, LMS platforms, and online collaboration tools.
  • Previous experience working in international and multicultural environments is highly desirable.

Language Proficiency

  • Expert-level fluency in English (oral and written) as per the UN Language Framework.
  • Knowledge of any other official UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian) is an advantage.
