About UNU-IAS:

The UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) is a research and training institute based at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo. Through postgraduate education programs, UNU-IAS nurtures future international leaders with interdisciplinary skills to address sustainability issues. Research Fellow and Academic Associate Position Available at UNU

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the UNU-IAS Director and Head of Programme and Administration, the consultant will:

  1. Research Activities:
    • Conduct research on climate change and sustainable development, emphasizing the transformation of socio-economic systems and governance for sustainability.
    • Monitor funded research progress and assist in drafting donor reports.
    • Support the development of grant proposals and resource mobilization efforts.
    • Identify opportunities and establish strategic partnerships to expand research impacts.
  2. Capacity Building and Education:
    • Assist in operationalizing the Diploma Programme for Specialisation on the Paris Agreement, including course design and syllabus development.
    • Contribute to the Asia Pacific Mayor’s Academy initiative.
    • Prepare presentations, tools, and materials for capacity-building activities.
    • Monitor and report on the progress of educational activities.
  3. Knowledge Management and Outreach:
    • Produce policy reports, journal articles, and publications to address policy needs and contribute to international debates on sustainable development.
    • Prepare briefing documents and communication materials related to research, capacity building, and educational activities.
    • Participate in international conferences and events to share research findings.
    • Assist in providing talking points for UNU-IAS management and summarizing key meeting outcomes.
  4. UNU-IAS Postgraduate Degree and Training Programme:
    • Develop detailed curricula for designated lectures under the UNU-IAS PDT Programme.
    • Deliver lectures relevant to research, capacity building, and educational activities.
    • Serve as a Principal Academic Advisor for PDT Programme students.
    • Assist in the selection process for new students.
  5. Other Duties:
    • Undertake additional tasks as assigned by the Head of Programme and Administration.

Qualifications:

  1. Education and Certification:
    • PhD in Urban Planning, Sustainable Science, or related fields.
  2. Required Skills and Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years’ experience in climate change and sustainable development research.
    • At least 3 years’ experience in teaching and supervising students.
    • Substantial experience in implementing capacity-building activities in the Asia-Pacific region.
    • Track record of publications, including academic papers and policy briefs.
    • Experience in multidisciplinary research teams or projects.
    • Ability to report and present research findings at international conferences.
    • Previous work experience in an international organization is advantageous.
  3. Language Requirements:
    • Fluency in English is essential.
    • Proficiency in another UN official language is desirable.

Remuneration:

The successful candidate will receive an attractive compensation package, including an annual net salary ranging from JPY 614,417 to JPY 678,917. Benefits include 30 days of annual leave and health insurance coverage.
