About ECLAC

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. Established in 1948, ECLAC’s mission is to promote the economic and social development of Latin America and the Caribbean through regional and international cooperation and integration. The Division for Gender Affairs within ECLAC focuses on the advancement of gender equality and the empowerment of women in the region.

Position Overview

This position is located in the Division for Gender Affairs at ECLAC in Santiago, Chile. The Research Assistant will report to the Chief of the Division. The Research Assistant will support the Division’s efforts in designing, monitoring, and evaluating public policies, as well as providing advisory services, expertise, and training to governments.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Division for Gender Affairs, the Research Assistant will:

  • Research and Analysis:
    • Assist in identifying and monitoring substantive aspects of the project’s work.
    • Select and evaluate a variety of documents, summarize pertinent material, collect, and analyze data, and prepare background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs, and reports.
    • Assist in preparing project proposals for extrabudgetary and regular budget funding.
  • Project Management:
    • Assist in planning and monitoring the work programme of the Division, including technical assistance and research projects.
    • Assist the Chief of the Division in managing staff and financial resources for the project.
  • Data Management:
    • Prepare reports, presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and diagrams to facilitate in-depth analysis.
    • Maintain and expand contacts with other departments in the Secretariat, UN agencies, programmes, and other organizations relevant to the region.
  • Documentation and Coordination:
    • Draft programme/project summaries, coordinate the review and clearance process, and work with editors and translation services for final publication.
    • Identify organizational requirements for conferences and meetings, assist in preparing documentation and reports, and attend meetings to follow discussions, take notes, and prepare summary reports.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Prepare, maintain, and update files (electronic and paper) and internal databases.
    • Provide guidance and training to new/junior staff.
    • Assist with data collection and analysis, preparing data presentations and reports for information sharing, knowledge management, and decision making.
    • Assist with visualizations and updating information materials such as web pages or brochures.
  • Additional Tasks:
    • Perform other related work as required.

Competencies

  • Professionalism: Demonstrates knowledge of research methodologies, data collection, and maintenance. Ability to identify, extract, analyze, and format data from various sources.   • Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals consistent with agreed strategies, identifies priority activities, adjusts priorities as required, allocates time and resources efficiently, foresees risks, and allows for contingencies when planning.
  • Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology, understands applicability and limitations of technology to the office’s work, actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks, and shows willingness to learn new technology.

Education

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Desirable: Relevant training or courses in the field of Business Administration.

Work Experience

  • Required: More than 7 years of experience in research and analysis (5 years if the candidate possesses a first-level university degree or higher).
  • Required: Experience in gender perspective designing, planning, and executing research projects.
  • Required: Experience working with ERPs such as Umoja.
  • Desirable: Experience in strategic planning and project management.
  • Desirable: 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related areas.

Languages

  • Required: Fluency in both English and Spanish.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of another UN official language.
