Organizational Context

The role of humanitarian-development collaboration to enhance socioeconomic development opportunities and provide comprehensive solutions for refugees, forcibly displaced persons, and host communities is emphasized in the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR). To support the transition from delivering aid to sustainable approaches and operationalize the GCR, UNHCR has identified the need to engage meaningfully with development actors.

To promote this engagement, UNHCR has established (Senior) Development Officers (SDOs) and Economist functions from various development-related backgrounds. These roles aim to increase joint analysis, planning, and programming with development actors. Additionally, SDOs support UNHCR’s capacity building in development programming and processes in Country Operations.

Internship Opportunity: Support Capacity Building at UNHCR

Much of the knowledge gathered at the Country and Regional levels is still being analyzed, leading UNHCR to invest in documenting experiences and enhancing knowledge management and staff capacity. Key areas for capacity building include understanding HQ divisions, Regional Bureaus, and various staff categories at the country operation level to engage with development actors. Building knowledge on programming cycles of priority development partners and understanding protection considerations when development actors implement in forced displacement settings are priorities for UNHCR.

Supported by the German Development Cooperation, the Global Programme “Support to UNHCR in facilitating the operationalization of the Global Compact on Refugees in the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus” (SUN), in partnership with GIZ, provides strategic support to UNHCR. This includes strengthening UNHCR staff’s capacity to facilitate comprehensive responses at country and regional levels in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus.
