Background & Job Description
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Mongolia is offering a 6-month International Research Fellowship to support statistical capacity building in the country. The role is part of the SDG Integration Practice Area and focuses on incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the national statistical system—specifically enhancing the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) framework.
The selected fellow will collaborate with the National Statistics Office (NSO) of Mongolia and use insights from the Korea National Statistical Office (KOSTAT) to pilot AI-based innovations for data analysis and census work. The fellowship is supported through the UNDP Seoul Policy Centre’s SDG Partnership initiative.
Tasks
- Pilot and test AI tools for data compilation and analysis using KOSTAT methodologies
- Develop AI solutions such as chatbots to improve respondent engagement in surveys
- Organize workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions with stakeholders
- Co-develop an AI Playbook detailing methodologies, workflows, and lessons learned
- Enhance MPI granularity using machine learning and automation
- Support policymakers in using AI-powered MPI data for targeted development
- Perform other tasks as needed, as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Master’s degree or higher in Data Science, Computer Science, AI, Statistics, Economics, or similar fields
Experience
- At least 2 years of experience in artificial intelligence, data analysis, machine learning, or digital innovation
- Experience working on large-scale statistical projects is preferred
- Familiarity with Generative AI, NLP (e.g., transformer models), deep learning, or Edge AI is a strong asset
- Demonstrated ability to manage and analyze complex datasets
Additional Information
Required Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Advanced analytics skills in Power BI, Tableau, Python, or R
Language
- Fluency in English is required
